Sluggish laptop

Hi all,

I bought an HP laptop the other day. It has windows 7 ultimate on it. The hard drive is about 500gb and it has 4gb of ram with a 15.6" screen. The model number is 15-g-019wm.

Even though it's a new install of the OS the laptop is sluggish...Takes a while for webpages to load even though my cable internet is fast and just opening picture files with windows photo viewer and starting programs are pretty slow to open.

I've stopped several apps from starting on boot and I think I'm running it about as bare bones as I can.

I'm thinking the processor " AMD E1-2100 APU with Radeon HD Graphics 1.0 ghz" is the problem.

Am I correct or could there be something else wrong other than the processor?

Thanks,
Jim

If you need suggestions, make sure to let us know what your budget is, screen size, Windows 7 or 8, location (city/state), etc.?

Thank you very much for your guidance.

I've been out of the computer game for a while and didn't research processors very well when I bought this used HP I was talking about. I see what going cheap $175 for the HP got me. A hamster running in a wheel for a processor!

It wouldn't bother me to spend $600 to $700 for something that is a little more snappy.

I would like a 15.6" screen and would like something with windows 7. It's mainly going to be used for internet and storage of photos.

I'm guessing 4 to 6gb of ram is enough and a 500gb hard drive is enough for my needs.

I prefer a touchpad as far as a mouse goes.

Located in Arkansas.

I recently acquired two Lenovo G50-80 laptop with Core i5-5200U, 6GB RAM, and the newer Intel 5500 graphics from Newegg. First one was $420 plus tax but got the second one two weeks later for $390 plus tax (special sale price). Much faster than I thought it was going to be for the price. Would be a huge improvement over that low-end E2100. Even came with a DVD-RW drive. Only complaint I could come up with is that the web camera image quality sucks, even in good lighting is poor.

Only other complaint, the shell is a bit "plasticky" and bendy, if you know what I mean. But pretty much all notebooks in sub-$500 range are, so it's nothing unique to that Lenovo model. Weighs 4lbs 14oz with battery.

Best bang for buck http://www.ebay.com/itm/26188773764...campid=5337259887&afepn=5337259887&rmvSB=true
But personally i would look into something with at least 1080p screen.
like http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Dell-In...sh=item41976f4b8d&afepn=5337259887&rmvSB=true

I know both laptops are on Flea-bay , but seller is Official Microsoft Store on eBay. I think these laptops will be free of any any bloatware because they are Microsoft signatures laptops.
If you can play a wait and watch game you can find very decents deals on Thinkpads on Lenovo Outlet stores. I bought a new T450s ( for my sis) for 650.00 plus tax with all frills of SSD(256 GB) 1080p 12gb ram etc etc. http://outlet.lenovo.com/outlet_us/laptops/#facet-1=1,2,3,4&facet-3=14

Personally if i was going to keep a Laptop for a longer period of time (4 to 5 years) I would invest in a business class laptop for example the T-series from Lenovo or a Latitude from Dell.

Can you please elaborate why Windows 7 is a must.
Most people HATE Windows 8... biggest marketing faux pas of Microsoft since Vista and Windows Millenium Edition.

Windows 8 is soooo bad, that Microsoft Marketing skipped Windows 9 altogether, in order to INCREASE the perception of distance between Windows 10 and Windows 8.

LoL

It's what I know and what I'm comfortable with. Gave windows 8.1 a try but it didn't do it for me. As long as windows 7 is available at whatever cost I'll go that route.

Heck...I was happy with XP Pro.......let the stone throwing begin!

Have you had a chance to look at 10? Both 7 and 8 have a free upgrade to 10. 10 has a start menu for laptop/desktop use, and will last much longer than 7 with support. There are several free start menu replacements linked at the top of the "Software for Windows" thread, making 8 seem pretty much like Windows 7.

The point is, there isn't a good reason at this point to go with 7, and definitely no reason to spend more for it (which would likely be the case if you want a deal.)

I sure you want to be in your comfort zone it's more comforting and familiar situation. But Windows 8.1 is a superior OS than Windows 7. But if you are running some proprietary legacy software which cannot run on Windows 8.1 or the upcoming Windows 10 then you should be using Windows 7or XP. Hell I run some legacy software on XP. Otherwise you can look into installing Classic Shell to make your Windows 8.1 look and feel like the familiar like like Windows 7 or even Windows XP.

I concur with ketchup, as Windows 10 marks the return of the Start button and the Windows 7 style desktop with which most Windows users are comfortable.

It will be supported for much longer than any of the other options.

But most of all, it's FREE to Win7/Win8 users, and it will be released to the public (preview already available now to Enterprise and developers) at the end of July.

I may slow my roll and just wait until windows 10 comes out and check it out and then buy.....I've got a spare HP laptop with windows 7 home that kicks the butt of the newer HP laptop with windows 7 ultimate that I bought the other day. I may just use it until 10 comes out and buy one with 10 on it instead of an upgrade. I'm not as nearly in the computer main stream as the guys on this forum....I used to be back in the 2000 to 2005 year range when I kept up with the latest and greatest.....things change quickly when you step out several years.

A little off topic, but I am really surprised manufacturers are buying these slow AMD CPU's and wrapping them in a new computer (however nice the price may be). As you pointed out jyates, there are laptops that are several years old now that whip these "new" ones.

I have a $400 Lenovo laptop that is about 4 years old and still runs plenty fast (has an Intel Pentium chip). The fact that you can pay the same for a slower laptop now is ridiculous.

Oh and another gripe on that newer HP laptop....the touchpad is about the size of a hockey rink and I can't type on it without rubbing up against the touchpad and moving the cursor around to places where it doesn't need to be.
