Small notebook with dvi output or large resolution output

Hello,

Looking for a small 10"-15 notebook for basic internet & writing work. Preferably cheap. But it has to have dvi output so I can connect it to my dell 30" & my friends 30" at the native resolution. So i can go back n forth from my house carrying a small device & then show him my work on his large desktop. Sorry for being picky.

But the standard hdmi isnt capable of getting the high resolution on the dell 30" from what I read? Just looking for suggestions on what i can buy to accomplish this. thanks in advance.

HDMI can get just as high resolution as DVI. In fact the standards are very similar, HDMI just passes audio as well. It's arguable that neither standard is great, but unfortunately HDMI is here to stay. If you don't have an HDMI port on the monitor, you can pick up HDMI to DVI cables assuming the DVI port is a compatible type.

Check out on wikipedia about DVI connectors, there's a fair amount of difference between DVI ports, but unless the display is pretty old you should be good to go with direct HDMI or the right DVI.

Are there any laptops with DisplayPort? You could then get a DisplayPort-to-dual-link-DVI adaptor. Possibly some Apple product might let you do that.

Newer business line machines (HP Pro/EliteBooks, Dell Latitudes) should have displayport. All the new Macs with MiniDP/Thunderbolt can drive dual-link, the older 15&17" MBPs with full DVI ports were the same. If it had the MiniDVI port, you were limited to single-link.

That isn't entirely true.
1. The standards are more then just similar. an HDMI cable carries one "single link DVI" video signal (literally the same as in DVI) and one audio signal.
A DVI cable on the other hand may carry:
1. Analog output
2. A "single link DVI" output
3. A second "single link DVI" output

I say may because not all DVI cables have all 3, most don't. So you have quite a bunch of different mixes of DVI cable types.

So a DVI plug can theoretically be used to run 2 DVI links for double the data of HDMI, this is called "dual link DVI" which allows it double the bandwidth. Every HDMI generation improves the max speed on its single lane, but DVI dual link remains double that since it is the exact same lanes..

Using 24bit per pixel (PC standard)
HDMI v1.0 through 1.2 maxes out at 1920×1200p60
HDMI v1.3 maxes out at 2560×1600p75
HDMI v1.4 allows trading FPS for resolution with a max res of 4096×2160p24; p24 is NTSC video standard framerate; at p75 it is still limited to the same 2560x1600 (typical 30" resolution)

What 30" monitor do you actually have? We need to know:
1. What resolution the monitor has.

3. What is its max refresh rate (typically 60Hz = 60FPS = p60 (progressive scan 60 FPS), rarely 75Hz; if 3D will be 120Hz).

All together it will allow us to determine if you can max it out over HDMI or if you need dual link DVI to max it out.

Note that it is entirely possible to run it with HDMI with lower then its max capability, but it seems a bit of a waste to do so.
If it is a normal 30" monitor than most likely MDMI v1.3 will max it out

I have the dell 3007wfp with 2560x1600 & no hdmi, my friends is the newer dell 3008wfp im pretty sure. My screen is 60hz max, same as his. thanks

If his 30" has HDMI then it might work but in my 40 mins of searching i couldnt find a DVI to DP adapter that would display more then 1920x1200. :\

If it has HDMI he might be able to use that to get the full 2560x1600

Just for the record. I was trying to use this cable connection at first on a cheap test notebook with hdmi. But only did 1080p on the 30".

they make hdmi to dvi cables. but you aren't gonna get 2560x1600 for your 30".

best to just buy a display port laptop.

the entire thinkpad line i believe (other than the edge, and x120/x100 anyway) have displayport.

if you can afford the new x220... that definitely has it. we have the W and T series at work and they have it too. the W series actually has dual display port out. if you buy the dock for thinkpads it has dual dvi OR dual display port out. cheapest laptops you could probably get are the ones they will clear out since the sandy bridge ones are out (so older core i3/5/7) . still probably $600 at least.

Every single one I saw has a usb cable dangling out of it, it draws power via USB to run the internal circuitry. So you plug it into your display port, your DVI monitor, and your USB port at the same time.
