Small PAL/NTSC VCD, JPG, MP3, progressive DVD player for $58 or $48 AR?

I was a the shack today and noticed they are selling a do everything including PAL DVD player for $69.99. The thing that struck me is that it's a tiny little thing. Here's the shack link.

Considering it's tiny and does everything under the sun, I think it's at least a warm deal for $70.

Update: The website says it's on sale for $58 and there's also a $10 rebate. I'm not sure whether it's $58 before or after the rebate.

Hmm, I wonder if PAL might mean it does more then just Region 0 or is that wishful thinking?

isn't there some website that tells you some buttons to press on your controller and it'll take off the region on your dvd?

Now about $52 after $10 rebate. Nice and small, a little chirping from the drive when playing mp3 or audio cds but spins relatively quietly compared to other's I've tried (especially compared to that sweet little Target KOSS unit that had the perfect hacked firmware but was too loud and cheaply made for me to keep), plays dvd's well that my older players have trouble with. Quick response from remote buttons. No region-free/macrovision hack reported yet, but hopefully someone will find something. Would be nice if someone "fixed" the firmware on this one like they did with the Target Koss player.

Hmmm. This unit looks small enough to be portable. Any thoughts about checking whether the PSU can be ripped out and this thing get powered directly from a Auto power plug?

Stupid question. Can a PAL DVD be played back on a U.S. television? Does all of the PAL decoding occur in the DVD player or the television? Thanks.

You would need a PAL TV for PAL DVD playback. However, some units (I know my Apex does) can convert the signal to NTSC for output, allowing you to playback PAL DVDs on any standard NTSC TV. dunno if this one does that...
