why the hell couldnt they make eSATA and SATA the same connector?

i just had a pc die, so i bought a laptop. i have NO idea how to get the info i want off of my backup drive to my laptop, any ideas?

I thought they were the same :^/ I never really looked closely, but I thought eSATA was basically the same, only ruggedized.

You can get SATA to USB adapters.

You're sure you can't hook it up to the eSATA port?(You'd have to run a power lead to the drive) If not a external enclosure's probably your best bet.

so heres another question. ive got NO idea why the computer wont turn on...aside from its other problems, its always done that. however, the mobo lights up when the power is on. if i attach hd to the mobo, and then get a sata to usb or esata converter, will it work, or will the hd still not be on since the entire system isnt on (which is what i think will happen)?

Maybe it's just too early for me, but if you can attach a HD to the MBs power, why can't you attach a data cable from the MB to the drive?

Easiest way would be using an external housing.

Yes, use a external USB enclosure, you cang et one these days that supports SATA for < $30 easily. Or use what he posted above, that cable will do nicely.

Well, that adapter will provide power to the HDD separate from the system so it will work fine outside the computer. Connect the USB to a laptop & you can grab your data or use it as a storage drive.

For the other part, do you want some help troubleshooting your problems on the computer? If so, give us a complete list of parts & describe the problem exactly and we may be able to help isolate & fix the problem.
