Been looking at the Kindle Fire HD 7" and the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 7"

both are the same price at $199.99. I watched some youtube reviews but they seem biased towards 1 or the other and I completely disagree with some of the the things they said.

in 1 review they compared both units side by side. the comparison was sound. The Kindle clearly sounded much better to me than the Note 2 in the video, but the guy said in real life the Note 2 was better. The Note 2 sounded extremely tinny.

My niece and nephew have a Kindle Fire HD and I've played with those a little but not much.

The Note 2 has a memory slot to add flash memory, whereas the kindle doesn't.

it's a bit more expensive than the other 2. what makes it so special?

Same price, 199.99. Unless you absolutely have to have expandable storage or Amazon Streaming Video, the Nexus 7 is the better buy. If you need to have expandable storage, pass on the Tab 2 and wait for the Tab 3s in a few months.

Edit - Also, Galaxy Note 2 7"? There's no such thing, my above assumes you mean Galaxy Tab 2 7".

thats weird, i was looking at Amazon for the price. they sell it for like 234 or something like that.

yeah, meant Galaxy Tab 2 7....too many different products with similar names.

is the tab 3 going to be the same price - 199?

No idea whats up with Amazon's pricing, but other vendors have gouged on Nexus pricing before. I expect better from Amazon, but you can order from the Play Store.

Agreed, Sammy has too many products with similar sounding names. :/

Tab 3 exists in a couple of leaked blurry cam pictures, nothing more. So, no idea.

I have the Kindle Fire HD and really like it. The sound quality and picture quality were big reasons I went with it over the Nexus 7. And the Galaxy Tab 2 wasn't even under consideration. The Galaxy Tab 2 has a 1024x600 resolution screen which a deal breaker for me (no matter how much I'd love to have a micro SD slot).

I think the Nexus 7 is a great tablet and easy to recommend for most people wanting a 7 inch $200 tablet. I love the feel of the tablet in my hand, it's narrow enough to hold comfortably while reading in portrait for ebooks. Soft touch back and rounded edges help a lot too. Tegra 3 processor is great for a tablet this size. What I don't like about it is the colors are a bit washed out and the sound quality is bad. I also had the misfortune of trying to buy a Nexus 7 when it first came out and ASUS couldn't seem to manufacture the dang things without the left side of the screen being loose (I imagine that's not an issue anymore).

I ended going with the Fire HD because I already had a Prime membership and access to Amazing Instant Videos and the Lending Library were big bonuses (I read ebooks and stream videos quite a bit). Has the same resolution screen, but Amazon obviously calibrated it much better, colors look good. The stereo speakers sound great and plenty loud. The downsides for the Fire HD is you need to root it to get Google Play installed, the TI 4460 processor is a little slow, and it's a bit chunkier and less comfortable to hold.

For most people I'd say the Nexus 7 is the no brainer. But if you have Amazon Prime, the Fire HD becomes a decent alternative.

I'd go with the Nexus 7. Owning one myself, it's a great little tablet.

It's got a better OS than the Kindle Fire (real, stock, Android 4.2), and a better screen and better processor than the Galaxy Tab.

Pretty much this. If you have prime, its a big deal. Sure you can go through the web browser and install flash to do it, but the prime experience is really good on the fire. Plus you can get root and install play on it so you're not stuck with the amazon app store.

Nexus 7 is a better tablet I guess, but the fire is a great media device.

nook hd is 199 also, and it's only 8 gb compared to 16 gb on the other brands. nook is also customized android and can only access nook store which i'm willing to bet is worse than the kindle store.

I'm leaning towards the Nexus 7 right now. Anyone know of any sales or coupons to get it cheaper than 199?

I agree. The price is good, and phone function with a tablet is a definite benefit.

If you're into movies, ebooks and good sound, the Fire HD would be a better choice. Anything else and you should probably get a Nexus 7.

If you have the GSM Nexus 7 you can already make free phone calls on the go (uses data), and completely free in any place with WIFI.

As an owner of a GTab2 7" I find the sound quality on it pretty decent. Even on headphones the sound is pretty good. It pretty much the reason I bought it. Well, that and the SD card and the IR on it. It serves me well and the sound is very good. Much better than any other tablet I have tried. My only beef with it is that the speakers are on the bottom, which is retarded as I watch media in landscape, but its a 1000 times better sounding than my old tf101 which had 2 forward facing speakers and sounded like crap.

people seem to make a big deal about the IR...why? what is it useful for?
