I dunno if you can find it in hot deals, but I have a Sony DXC-P51. It's pretty cool for the price. I'm very happy with it.

Or canon elph s410 for
$400, not quite as small but still a pocket camera and a bit less.

very small, but not the smallest. straight speaking for Canon digicams only, SD10 is the smallest digicam by canon and I own one.
s400/s410 is far from being the smallest. the next smallest by canon is sd100/s230, which with 2x zoom. s400 would be next, i guess.

get sd10 if you want the smallest with well quality. casio s4 is thinner than sd10, but bigger and the lcd is trash.

Nope, it's even a marketing ploy by them....what is more likely to be stolen a 'camera case' or an Altoids tin should you forget your camera.

Also price is a big factor in this....I had a Canon A50, probaby pic one up cheap now...1.3MP and the original 'elph'....a pocket camera still, but a bit larger than some now.

I am using a A70 now, still pretty small.

The Canon S230 is an overlooked ultra compact and should come at a decent price.

Your budget really determines the options as more $$$ always equals better however each dollar buys diminishing returns. I am happy in the $150-200 range, what I did was buy my starter camera when it was entering the used market at that price point low, and then sold high a couple years later and made my next digicam purchase a $100 net cost (Christmas had a $50 rebate so it would have been a $150 purchase without it).

Good luck

Sony DSC-U20/30/40 are also pretty small too, about the same size as the S4.

Used a Canon S200 before that but to me it wasn't really a small camera, too big to fit in jeans pocket. S4 is nice, it was still to big for me though (just a little bit wider). I debated for a while between the U-30 and S4 but in the end the smaller size (I usually wear it around my neck) and lower price won out.

Of all those mentioned above which has the best optics, because that's what it all comes down to?

By looks, I'd say the Pentax, but you can't judge a book by its cover.

The S400 absolutely has the best quality, but it isn't in the same size bracket, IMO. The SD10 is a little bit better than the S4 in low light situations, but lacks optical zoom. I think I looked at/played with all the cameras listed so far (barring the T1 as it wasn't out yet and I knew it'd be too expensive to wait for anyways) plus others (kyocera sl3000r comes to mind) when looking for a new ultrasmall cam and found the S4 to be the best balance or quality, features, and price.

yea, as far as optics, the s400 would be the best, followed by any other canon camera....i am spoiled by the canon optics and about the only other thing i could use would be a nikon, and then probably only their dslr's

I just bought a MINOLTA G400 4MP and it has optical zoom and takes sd cards and memory sticks at the same time plus it has the fastest startup and can do the continuous shoot,I have ripped off like 6 in a row and it is very small but handles well.
Check it out at steves digicams ...
I was lucky enough to get in on the newegg $125 rebate and got it for $224 shipped !!!

from my personnal experience, Canon cameras never really had good optics and a decent CCD (either one deficiency or the other). From my s230, and even up to my friend's s400, I've noticed that the color reproduction on all the pictures always appear grainy and unnatural. My old dimage from Minolta on the other hand has much smoother color transitions across the entire spectrum resulting in much more vibrant photos. I've never had a pentax digicam before, but if they're applying the same level of quality from their SLR and regular film cameras to their digicams, then I'm assuming that their lenses must be excellent.

With Canon I have never really witnessed grainy pictures unless ISO was fuxored on the shot. Almost any Canon deficiencies I have read about have been 'fringing' which happens with many cameras. Of course there are some cameras better than canon, however it's usually at a higher price point or larger form factor.

Almost all of the problems I hear people having whether it's Nikon, Canon, whatever I have been able to eliminate with proper manual selections. It's the same types of problems film P&S cameras had just that when it's digital people assume it's going to be perfect.

Do you need any additional features (zoom, etc) or just a "small camera"?

The Sony DSC U30 is a nice small camera

well I guess to each their own if ya don't mind giving up the optical zoom, not acceptable in my book.
Also when cameras get that small they tend to be a pain to work especially with one hand unless you have petite hands...
