I don't think what you are looking for exists - indoor/outdoor, SD/local/cloud, wireless & PoE...too many requirements haha. What might be worth looking into is a quality base-model DVR (aka NVR, network video recorder) that supports a variety of cameras, something like a QNAP surveillance model:

http://www.qnap.com/en/index.php?sn=822&c=352

Those have a lot of nice features:

1. NVR units that range from 4 channels to 64 channels (includes APC UPS support)
2. Ability to link multiple NVR units (if you want to upgrade in the future, but keep what you already have)
3. Variety of storage options from 2 bay to 12 bay
4. Mobile apps for iPhone, Android, and Windows phones
5. Support for a variety of cameras: (not a full list...I've seen Foscams listed as well)

AXIS
ACTi
A-MTK
Arecont Vision
AVTECH
Brickcom
Canon
Cisco
CNB
DIGITUS
D-Link
EDIMAX
ELMO
EtroVision
GANZ
Honeywell
iPUX
IPX
IQeye
LevelOne
Linksys
Messoa
MOBOTIX
NAKAYO
Panasonic BB/BL/i-Pro
Pelco
SANYO
SHANY
SONY
TOA
TOSHIBA
TRENDnet
Videosec
VIOSECURE
VIVOTEK
Y-CAM
Generic camera support

So you can start out with a base-model NVR and some cheap Y-cams or something, and add what you need over time, as budget allows. For example, there are some neat cameras like the F41 pinhole camera from AXIS which can be run PoE (including outdoor - you can buy weatherproof Ethernet cable too) & use a variety of FOV lenses (varifocal 53° to 108°, fixed 113°, fisheye 194°):

http://www.axis.com/corporate/press/releases/viewstory.php?case_id=3532

Downside is that the NVR's start at $400. Upside is that you can use a huge variety of cameras, connect to it using just about any device for viewing, and it has plenty of crazy features so you can keep growing your system over the long run.

I'm porting the "analog" gear (non-electronic) in the OP to the "Home and Garden" sub-forum. It's going to take me a week or two to weed through it all, but the majority of the post is up now:

Modern home materials & technologies discussion thread

I may do another thread for cool appliances if anybody's interested (I'm heavily into cooking).

Now on sale for $99.99

I stopped by Best Buy the other night to check out the network cameras in-person. I'm looking to pick one up for my patio to watch the grills (especially the smoker, since it's downstairs, the kitchen is upstairs, & I have to run down the stairs to check on it, which is a pain). I don't think I want to do an outdoor one, so the next best thing is an indoor unit that I can attach looking out the window. I was thinking about a contract-free Dropcam, which has an amazing wide-angle & full 1080p, but I don't really want to spend $200 just to watch my grills. Turns out D-link has their own line of cameras, including a small $50 Ethernet-based model: (wifi too)

http://www.amazon.com/D-Link-Wireles...dp/B004P8K24W/

I like the size, plus it comes with a smartphone app, so I may pick that up because it's small & cheap (compared to the Foscam, which is a bit of a monster size-wise).

If you decide to buy the D-Link 932L, it goes on sale every few months for $80 a pair. Unless you need it immediately or only need one, I would wait for another deal.

New devices huh?! Looking forward to seeing how this one works and more specs.

Yeah, this could be a worthy Wink competitor.....who knows what Samsung is doing with Smart Things at this point...

Another smart lock system: Okidokeys (yes, really)

https://www.okidokeys.com/

I am honestly surprised I've never heard of this before. It's an amazing system with a great price - and an enormous step up from the Lockitron. My only complaint would be the industrial design of both the hardware & the app (both look goofy), but apparently they have interchangeable faceplates now (including more traditional colors), which can also be custom-painted to match your residence. The video is a bit long, but provides a good introduction to the system:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z_7fFAkJgWs

Review here:

http://www.thegadgetguycolumn.com/2014/11/11/okidokeys-smart-lock

Reviews are generally positive on Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=bl_sr_hi...ys&node=228013

CNET has the scoop: (from January)

http://www.cnet.com/products/okidokeys-smart-lock-polar-white/

A spin-off project from hotel smart lock provider OpenWays, Okidokeys has what looks like a comprehensive line of smart-lock products on its hands. Not only will the company be selling its Bluetooth-enabled Smart-Lock, but it also has an in-home gateway to sync up control of multiple locks, an electronic gate/garage door opener, as well as a door-mountable reader you can use to swipe your way inside your home.

This is actually a really cool system for a number of reasons:

1. It's compatible with many existing deadbolts
2. Multiple control options
3. Multiple locations
4. Multiple door types

Key features:

1. Uses (4) AAA batteries (battery life appears to be about 4 months)
2. Not dependent no Wifi to operate
3. Hands-free mode unlocks the house when you're nearby (Bluetooth proximity detection)
4. Intrusion warning with built-in alarm
5. Option to automatically re-lock your door after closing it (NICE!)
6. Notifications
7. Control via app or browser
8. Add both users & time-shifts
9. Control multiple doors
10. Control multiple homes
11. Available in white, black, satin chrome, satin brass, antique brass, and paint-it-yourself to match your home

As far as security goes:

In terms of digital security, OKIDOKEYS products use highly secure encryption technologies, similar to banking and military standards (including AES 256-bit and 3D Secure login), combined with additional layers of proven and patented security technologies. The Smart-Lock, web portal, and app are as close to impossible to hack as they can be, and have been certified by multiple independent security auditors and major hotel chains.

Hardware compatibility:

1. Compatible with single-cylinder ANSI Grade 1 or 2 deadbolts & keys
2. Brands include Schlage, Yale, Kwikset, Weslock, Baldwin, and Weiserlock
3. Not compatible with mortise, rim cylinder, or integrated lock & handle

Control options:

1. Bluetooth 4.0 (proximity unlock)
2. Non-smartphones (via SMS)
3. RFID (wristbands, cards, and keychains - no battery)
4. Wifi (via their web portal; see licensing below for more info)

Software compatibility:

1. iPhone app (iPhone 4S or above)
2. Android app (Android 4.3 or above)
3. Web portal

Licensing:

1. HomeKeys license
2. ProKeys license ($25/yr)

The ProKeys license basically just bumps up what you get for free with the HomeKeys license: manage unlimited devices (5 with HomeKeys), unlimited users (10 with HomeKeys), up to 25 SMS keys per month (10 with HomeKeys), and unlimited time-shifts. They do have a separate SMS Pack if you need more than 25 SMS keys per month; that is actually really smart because a lot of contractors still don't use smartphones.

https://www.okidokeys.com/content/18-okidokeys-licences

Hardware:

https://www.okidokeys.com/2-all-products

1. Smart-Lock: ($200) Includes a lock and a HomeKeys license.
2. Access-Pack: ($260) Adds one of each on top of the lock kit: white reader, card, wristband, and keychain. Basically like an RFID starter bundle ($40 savings as bundled).
3. Connect-Pack: ($360) Adds a gateway on top of the Access Pack ($80 total savings as bundled).

4. Smart-Lock Covers: ($20)

5. Smart-Garage: ($200) Using garage door's existing electric mechanism & runs off door’s existing power supply.
6. Smart-Gate: ($200) Using gates door's existing electric mechanism & runs off door’s existing power supply.

7. Smart-Gateway: ($140) Basically a Wifi bridge that lets your locks talk to Wifi, which lets them communicate with the web portal, which lets you do remote management & get alerts.

8. Smart-Reader: ($100) Includes reader, card, wristbad, and keychain. Runs off (3) AAA batteries. Includes wireless doorbell in the reader. Peel & stick installation. Required for all RFID gear.
9. Wristband-Tag: (3-pack for $20, 9-pack for $50) Comes in white, black, and green.
10. Wristband-Tag Kids: (3-pack for $20, 9-pack for $50) Comes in pink, green, and blue.
11. Keychain-Tags: (3 for $20, 9 for $50) Comes in white, silver, or green.
12. Card-Tag: (3 for $20, 9 for $50)
13. Tag-Pack: ($50) Includes 3 cards, 3 wristbands (white, black, and green), and 3 keychains (white, silver, and green).

Freaking AWESOME! I was going to buy a Schlage smart deadbolt at some point for ~$200, plus a Chamberlain MyQ garage door adapter for $130 (that's $330 together for two separate systems that would tie into my Wink Hub), but this looks way better! Plus you can integrate your front door, your back door, and your garage door, and let other people come in, and do a second home or vacation home. This would be great for the elderly who have caretakers & cleaners, for wealthier people who have various types of help coming & going, people doing home projects with contractors, people with kids or large families, all kinds of applications! Brilliant system, adding to my wishlist for sure! Oh, and they do feature home automation integration.

Reading your posts make my wallet weep.

Fortunately, window shopping is freeeeee :awe:

But on the plus side, once you win the lottery, you can get some great 2-for-1 deals for both of us

You're absolutely correct and I love the window shopping and research phase. I just wish most of these vaporware (cough Kickstarter) products would become reality, ship 50,000 units and garner dozens of reviews. /sigh

But on the plus side, once you win the lottery, you can get some great 2-for-1 deals for both of us

Deal!

I can't wait to see what is announced at CES.

Yeah, me too. Although honestly I wish I could fast forward a few years after the industry consolidates and there's a few good choices standing atop the ruins of a thousand startups.

Samsung unveils new version of the SmartThings Hub: (available April)

http://www.engadget.com/2015/01/05/samsung-smarthings-hub-and-service/

Looks like you didn't have to wait long to see what Samsung would do in the smart home world after acquiring SmartThings -- it just unveiled a new version of the SmartThings Hub that automates your household with fewer hiccups. The new version is faster, and can run apps locally instead of farming them out to other devices. It also has a battery backup and more cellular data options, so your intricate network of lights and security systems won't fall into disarray just because of a momentary power outage.

The Hub isn't launching by itself. SmartThings is rolling out a new subscription home monitoring service (SmartThings Premium) that calls or texts certain people as soon as your smart home detects a problem. You can tell it to reach your neighbors when there's flooding, for example. It will also save footage from connected cameras to provide evidence of break-ins. Samsung hasn't said how much the Hub or the service will cost, but they'll both be available in North America this April.

Schlage's new smart lock lets you open your door with your voice:

http://www.engadget.com/2015/01/05/schlage-smart-lock/

* Works with Siri using HomeKit in iOS8 for voice unlock
* Works by 4-digit PIN code (up to 30 for different users)
* Works by key
* Takes four AA batteries

Sounds neat, although I'm curious if it will have any proximity features like the OKIDOKEY system does. The OKIDOKEY unit starts at $189, which is about the same as the existing Schlage Connect:

I don't get the point of the siri voice unlock. By the time you pull out your phone you can have the door unlocked with the pin code. Now if you can speak to the lock itself that's a different story.
