I have an almost two year old Evo. It's not rooted. I notice when I turn on the satellite layer in the GPS (Google Maps for mobile) that my car moves faster than the screen can redraw.
Is that a function of the data pipeline (3G) or would a new phone with a faster chip and ICS make a difference?

(Yes, I have a stand alone GPS but at times I need to use the phone.
And I am curious.)

You could try a factory reset first, or a overclock. Your hardware should be fast enough, but a new phone would also be good enough.

I've seen some Sprint users say Sprint's 3G can sometimes be ~100kbps(bits not bytes) average or less. Perhaps that isn't fast enough for satellite images to be streamed in real time.

What GPS software are you using?

If it's Gmaps try planning the route on wifi and see if it still lags then. Gmaps should cache the route and any lag should then not be down to your data speed.

it's the data connection.

That's a pretty big assumption based on no facts. What GPS software is he using? If it's google nav that is cached and as such data speed has no real impact other than loading the directions when you first start.

I would recommend a new phone. I've got the Samsung Galaxy Nexus with Google Navigation, and that works better than the navigation that's built into by Acura! As someone mentioned, it's probably the speed of your data connection. With 4G LTE you won't have that problem, assuming you live in an area with LTE coverage. If you're in CA, all the big cities are covered.

What carrier do you use?

I use Sprint. But we were traveling up 99 from Bakersfield towards Sacramento and I had no wifi.
I have 4g at work, but not at home (Sacramento area).

Google maps downloads the maps as needed, and if you're in an area with poor reception, it's not going to work perfectly regardless of the phone handset you're using.
