so apparently to prevent battery degradation for lithium-ion battery (sometimes Li-ion battery or LIB) that most cellphones use ..

it is to charge it to 90%
and discharge it a bit .. but say to 80%and repeat the cycle

Charge/discharge efficiency 80–90%[4]

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lithium-ion_battery

or watch first 2 minutes from this video

well some laptops like screenshot from VAIO have this feature as an option
see this http://images.google.com/images?q=sony+vaio+battery+charge options
(as i have "You may not post attachments")

question:

so I like to always keep it plugged in .. charging .. vs running it through a cycle .. not good?

why don't smartphones have this limit to 80%?

sounds like there should be even a firmware option .. from manufacturers ..

is there any app?

thank you ..

You're fine. I keep most of my electronics plugged in all the time. My current laptop's been plugged in 95% of the time for 2.5 years with only 11% degradation. My phones have been fine. Don't worry about it too much. Just don't expose stuff to extreme heat.

Unless you're planning on keeping your phone for +5yrs, all this talk about battery degradation is a bit premature.

Two things degrade LIon batteries - charge and heat.

Keep them cool and not fully charged.

As you mentioned, many laptop makers even provide an option to not fully charge the battery to preserve the battery's service life. Sony, Lenovo and Dell are the ones I am personally aware of.

AFAIK, smartphones already account for this so you don't have to worry about it too much. 100% displayed on your phone is not truly utilizing 100% of the battery at all times. There's a lot going on in the background to ensure the battery doesn't get ruined when left on a charger (which a lot of people do).

Gor is right, they should be reporting %100 even if they are staggering the top %10 with trickle charge. It is normal, laptops do it too.

Can always get a phone WITH a removable battery, and just buy a new battery as the old one loses charge.

You can but this obsession with "premium" materials means a lot of manufactures rely on non-removable batteries. There some nice feeling phones with "premium" feeling builds that allow removable batteries. The LG V10 and Note 4 come to mind as very nice compromises. However, the emphasis seems like it will be on "premium" feel over function for a while.

I would have figured such mechanism would be built into the phone: ex not actually charging battery to 100%, but still displaying 100%. I tend to plug mine in once a day to fully charge and I've been fine though. I have a Nexus 4. I sometimes plug it in if it's half way as well, I don't really have a set routine. It lasts me over a day if I don't charge at all but I typically don't go that long without charging.

That won't completely prevent battery wear. At best, it might reduce it a small percent. For most people, it won't matter and isn't worth the time and effort.

Buy hey, if you keep your phone 4-5 years more power to you.

Sadly.

Im personally hoping for a resurgence of removable batteries. I just find the idea of a non-removable battery in a smartphone to be backward. At least until battery technology takes a multi-generation leap forward.

I'd love to see smart phones be more modular in general. Never going to happen though because every company wants to do their own thing and wants people to replace their phone every few years. I know google was working on something like that, but idealy for it to be truly modular it would have to be a standard and not just a single product from a single company.

I've almost always done a full charge and discharge cycle each and every time on my phones and the battery life does not seem to degrade.
For example on my HTC M7 (longest I've kept a phone at 2+ yrs, before it found its way down the ice fishing hole ), I always did full charge-discharge cycles, meaning I always let it get down to about 10% before charging, and even after the 2 yrs I was still getting 2-3 days of battery life (I'm not a heavy user) like I was at the beginning.

That's why I love my Note 4 and S5, removable batteries and microsd card. I don't worry about it as they battery has been great for over 365 charge cycles and still going strong.

Why bother? Even "non-removable" batteries aren't particularly difficult or expensive to replace.

The longest I ever had a smartphone was 2 years and the battery didn't degrade noticeably during that time. I intentionally ran it down completely maybe 2-3 times during that period because I heard it was good to do that. It still lasted all day right up to the end, when the ear speaker started losing volume mysteriously causing me to finally replace it.

I've been known to run down my battery to the last 5-10% then charge it back up...and ive been doing that since the Windows Mobile days. People tend to overreact on the whole battery degredation thing but i think the bigger problem is to reduce heat from your phone. Heat could drastically cut down the life of a battery or any component for that matter. So if you're the type of person who plays game on your phone a lot, or have a lot of apps running in the background and notice that your phone are always warm/hot, you have bigger things to worry about than battery degredation.

Choices are kind of limited with a lot of the phone manufacturers going with non-removable.

Not if WE step in. Resist the urge to buy a phone that does not have a removable battery.

I will admit, I would prefer a Samsung s7 edge, but will settle for the LG V10. I have a G3 now and as long as it stays running nice with marshmallow, I will keep it for another year. Doubtful it will get android N.
