I did a search and only one thread was on smash lab from a diff episode, but we need to get the word out. This is a new show on Discovery. Commercials make it look cool, but it's like a low-rate mythbusters. Lacks the personality of the mythbuster guys, moves slowly, and straight sucks.

Last night they were doing one about carbon-wrapped mobile homes. Wrapping a mobile home in a carbon fiber sheet would supposedly protect it against an F5 hurricane. Despite the fact that amount of wrap must have cost them thousands and they found a used jet to make the wind, they were too lazy to strip the mobile home of its panels and put carbon wrap on properly, so they took a prexisting home and totally covered it in ply. They said something like this wouldn't make it any stronger, so ignore the ply (whatever). The they covered it i this wrap and then totally covered the windows in ply-sheeted wrap again, totally missing the point. The thing didn't resemble a mobile home at all, though at the end they proclaimed that the wrap worked!

Also, the chick doesn't even have the geeky attractiveness of the mythbusters one.

I give the show a C+, which puts it below my threshold of watching it again.

Thanks for listening!

I was the OP from the other thread about Smash Lab. Yeah, it still sucks. Their ideas are stupid to begin with and their implementation is even dumber.

Is it as bad of a rip off of Mythbusters as Eragon was Star Wars?

I agree with all of that, except the chick part. The mythbuster's girl is hardly attractive, but the one from Smashlabs is very attractive.

On the other hand, I think the weakness is the two kids. The two older guys are the only thing good about the show. Keep them and make another show.

Never saw Eragon. I wouldn't say it's a rip-off of Mythbusters... Mythbusters is about doing real life tests to debunk myths. Smash Lab is supposed to be about trying to make certain things better. Too bad they go about this in completely retarded, impractical ways. The whole entire show you're just sitting there going... "why are they even doing this? The idea is fundamentally a dead end."

The show makes no sense. It's like, lets take ideas that scientists & engineers have already passed off as stupid long ago, but let's do it all over again so we can destroy something on camera! We'll "pretend" there's a point, but there really isn't.

That was what I got from the commercials. Given that that is a large part of Mythbusters' popularity, I'm not surprised they would try to make an entire show on that premise.

Agreed. I'll get the gallows ready.

Smash Lab = Bad ripoff of Mythbusters
Some Assembly Required = How It's Made + Dirty Jobs - quality - entertaining value

I thought Eragon was a bad LOTR ripoff.

It kinda was both. You definitely could feel the whole "Last Jedi" vibe thing going on though.

I agree... this show sucks hard.

I only watched the air filled concrete, and their ideas were just stupid. How in the hell was air filled concrete barriers next to reinforced concrete barriers supposed to have any impact? I think it's pretty obvious why we don't see air filled concrete on highways... because it doesn't work for cars. Sure, an arrestor bed for a several ton airplane will stop it... but not a car or even a bus.

The sad part, is that there is already superior crash absorbing technology out there, especially in autoracing, and these dopes keep chugging along in hopes they'll do something useful. Crappy show... I doubt I'll watch again.

Besides, I got sick of those stupid intros every five minutes where all four of them would come walking in side by side. Ugh.

I also think this show sucks, they aren't consistent and they setup their 'experiments' all wrong

such as the concrete episode, wtf was with the ramp? do they think that a ramp will magically appear for the person that is going to drive on this stuff to slow down their vehicle? And what about the fact that the concrete was poured in such a piss-poor way, that (and they even said this) the consistency was all wrong (hard in some areas, soft in others)

then the mobile home episode, 2 things: First, they did it all wrong, you can't use the carbon fiber on top of ply wood, on top of the siding of the house, that makes it strong - yes- but for the wrong reasons. That and have they considered the costs of the carbon fiber, there are reasons why people are living in those homes, THEY DONT HAVE ALOT OF MONEY! 2 - they didn't strap down the mobile home well enough. Whats the point of doing the experiment if you aren't going to do it right. They admitted it wasn't secured correctly and yet they put it to the test anyways....

dear god this show sucks

forgot to mention, what is with the slow motion guy? Do we need to see 5 different angles of the same thing for 10 seconds each?

I saw that episode as well and that will be the last time I watch the show. It totally sucks and I did not get why they were doing it.

I was looking forward to the show, cuz it'd show up all the kinda stuff they blow up on mythbusters, but the hosts just suck.
