ya smc is a reliable networking equipment manufacturer. i'd put them just above linksys and netgear.

I have a 7004AWBR lying in my room collecting dust.. the thing had no range whatsoever.. there weren't even that many walls in between. Personally, I was always under the assumption that SMC made pretty crappy networking products.. I really wouldn't rate them over netgear and linksys.. probably not even over dlink... that's just from personal experience tho... might have just been unlucky with their products.

i have the 22mbs router with pcmcia card, and mom inlaw has the 11mbs set. i love them. they work great. i do say i like the 22mbs one better, since i do a lot of music and video, but if it's mainly for surfing, then the 11mbs would be perfect, and this is a great deal.

Yeah...you had some bad luck or you have some interference going on there. Your idea about SMC is wrong too. Their products are very well built and their wireless products are highly respected (way more than Linksys or DLink). Most of their wireless products accept an external antenna making them popular for corporate use. You'll see that magazines like PC Magazine rate SMC products pretty highly as well.

Shinj1EVA:
I'd have to agree w/Fritzo. SMC makes good, high quality products. Might be bad luck. What card do you use? If it's for a desktop system, I'd suggest something external - from what I understand the chassis causes some interference. For laptop, I'd go with the Orinoco, or Dell TrueMobile

Thanks for the deal... I ordered two day shipping cost me $93.20 - $20.00 = $73.20 Figure not a bad deal for both and to set the laptop to be able to roam the house what the heck....

smc complaints are common. i pointed out a deal for my cousin a few months ago for this router, and he complained that it was bad too. bad range. much better range when i brought both my dlinks over for testing.

but i recommended it cuz i thought smc was good. so who knows.

I have this SMC 7004VWBR when Compusa had it during their 6 hr sale . At first it was very unstable with wireless connection with older firmware . Since I flashed with newest 1.21a firmware, it has been pretty solid and does have a decent range with my Orinoco gold pc card

I also have notice that of all the router I had tried or had ( !) , this SMC 7004VWBR give me best performance and hasslefree setup with VPN ( Checkpoint Secure remote ) .

Linksys BEFW11S4 is the worst with VPN ( MTU has to be set really low to make it work ) .

Do you have to send the upc's from each item in on the rebate... doesn't say for sure which one or both? Also, I ordered second day air from warehouse on wed and got here this morning only thing is they sent me someone else's invoice... called them and they are supposed to be sending me my invoice out... have to wait and see I guess...

My SMC wireless setup has worked for over two years with no problems. We have a small house though, so I've yet to encounter range issues.

I also have an SMC 7004AWBR which I loved at first. Then it started overheating, all the time, and required resetting (unplug power for a few seconds then plug it back in). Major PITA so now it's just gathering dust.

Replaced it with the Microsoft WAP which has been a dream come true, best WAP I have ever used.
