RiceDiGiZ - for the most part, hubs and switches are essentially the same with one major exception. On a 100Mbps switch every network component connected to the switch can run at the max-rated speed (100Mbps). Hubs on the other hand split the bandwidth between network components, such that when only one (1) component is connected it will have a maximum available bandwidth of 100Mbps but when four (4) network components are used on a 100Mbps hub will each have a maximum bandidth speed of 25Mbps when all four are being used (100 divided by 4).

I got this deal a week and a half ago when they were at $250. I installed them with Linksys Routers at a couple of offices on DLS lines. Top end switch. Worked great! Only one switch arrived and I had to call Buy.com and have them ship the other switch out, which took an extra week.

The wife wouldn't let me buy 2 more. lol I tried to convince here that I really needed them.

I may have missed this in the discription but for those of you that have this switch. does it have an internal or external power supply? I have a alpha 5 port now and it has an internal and uses a regular computer power cord. I really like being able to use a regular cable and not have a big black power supply covering a second outlet on my surge strip.

SMC is quality! I bought an old SMC 10bt hub from someone on the boards, and it turned out it had a network management module inside. I called SMC at 2AM and they were able to tell me how to get it to work etc. Can't wait to replace my aging 10bt hubs with a switch..

K-squared:
Your description on the difference between switch and hub is wrong. Hub is using a shared bus for all the components connected including uplink and downlinks. The bankwidth is not divided, but shared. So, when there is only 1 component is transmitting and all the others are only listening, most of the bandwith can be uitlized by that single component. The main drawback of hub is the collision problem when many components are transmitting data at the same time that might cause no one can send any data successfully in the extreme case (it can be worse than the bandwidth is divided which still has a guaranteed bandwidth).

Switch provides a full bandwidth bus for each components, not a shared bus. So, each component can utilize the bandwidth as much as possible in both uplink and downlink.

Yup, don't forget full duplex, sending and receiving at the same time right? So a 100mb/s switch should have 200mb/s effective per connection. Anyone know how fast this switch really is? I currently have a SOHOware 5 port 100mbs autosensing switch, i never seem to transfer more then 4-5MB/s which is much less then 100mb/s

I ordered one but it looks like if the promotion wasn't for an extra switch then you could go Here and get a Linksys 16 port switch for $10 more and with $10 Overnight shipping. But I have to agree this is a great deal if you can sell or use the other one.
Thanks,

In Addition...

With a hub the data is sent to all of the machines on the network for acceptence. That means If you have 16 computers on your network, that packet will be sent to all of them until it reaches it's actual destination. With a switch it is lets say more smart. It knows where exactly to send the data.

mcdull - while my explanation may be overly simplistic, its not wrong. Some people in this thread didn't know the difference between a hub and a switch. I tried to provide a very simplistic explanation of the primary difference, as far as the end-user is concerned (bandwidth). While available bandwidth is due to how the data are handled when multiple components are active on the network, I'd venture to guess that most don't really care - they just want the maximum bandwidth possible. Hence the overly simplistic explanation - buy a switch and get full bandwidth, buy a hub and get something less.

ZeroCool420 - did you not read through the thread? I don't think your going to get $140+ for the "extra" switch. Unless you don't mind sitting-on the extra switch until the ferengi here have exhausted their stock and the number listed on e-bay drop to normal levels.

This e-bayer is listing two SMC 10/100 switches

and this e-bayer is listing four SMC 10/100 switches. They're scheduled to close tomorrow, and the highest current bid on any of the four is $56.00 and the current low is $31.00! All four auctions close-out tomorrow (ouch!).

another person listing two SMC 10/100 switches

and yet another listing three SMC 10/100 switches

atari.net also has two SMC 10/100 switches listed.

one individual listing four SMC 10/100 switches in a Dutch auction.

oh hummmm..... two more SMC 10/100 switches. The user-name hubseller_2001 is kind of comical.

This guy is definitely an AnandTecher - Soft Black Attache Case / Laptop Case (Staples), two auctions for case stickers (available for free), and the SMC switch....

All-in-all, I found a total of 29 SMC EZNET 10/100 switches using an "SMC 10/100 search", already listed! How many more will be listed once people actually receive their switches? But the scarier thought is that only a few people are bidding on all the various auctions, meaning there's little demand to run-up the closing bids.

I'm not trying to scare anyone out of getting-in on this deal. I plan on listing some of these switches once the number of listings drop. What I am trying to do, is to prevent someone here form getting burned on e-bay....

This switch is about to be discontinued by SMC, hence of course the 2 for 1 deal. They are trying to clear all resellers of this switch to make room for their new models. Act quickly because once supply is gone, you're back to paying regular price.

Zucchini - While Buy.com's product description doesn't explicitly list the SMC switch as a full duplexing switch, it does imply this in the second sentence of their general product description:

"The EZNET-16SW is as easy to install as an ordinary hub, but capable of dramatically improving the performance of your network by offering speeds of up to 200Mbps per port."

SMC's description also only implies this as a full-duplexing switch
SMC EZNET 10/100 switch. Their overview states the following:

"SMC is proud to announce a new addition to the EZ line of affordable, easy to use networking products: The EZ Switch 10/100. Designed to bring the power of switching to the desktop, these three new 10/100 Auto-Negotiating switches are as easy to install and use as an ordinary hub, but capable of dramatically improving the performance of your network by offering speeds of up to 200Mbps per port....."

BUT! Their product data sheet lists the switch as IEEE 802.3x full-duplex flow control at the bottom of the first page.

edit - damn HTML....
edit - SMC product description....

the funny thing the idiots are only getting one free. i emailed them and i was told only 1 free per user. so the morons who ordered 10 and hope they got 10 free, hehe spam em with neg feedback on e*ay for posting something and not going with the deal.

plus most of them have very little feedback. i will keep one and sell the other, i have 60+ feedback ratings and all are postive.

I was confused what you are saying. You mean that we are not getting a second switch and that the Linksys is better? I always thought that SMC makes the same quality if not better products as Linksys, but I do not know for sure. I never had anything made by Linksys other then my old 5 port hub that I have not used in a year or two.

Actually I am not too picky about the brand as long as it works in a home network. I have an Alpha and Addtronics switch now and was just looking to get one 8 port when this deal came out. My friend also needed an 8 port. So we are going to split the cost and each get a 16 port for the same price of an off brand 8 port. I have SMC NICs and have had no trouble with them so I am pleased that this switch is made by SMC.
