SMC7004ABR
Is this router any good? I will be running 3 machines on it. #1 98SE/XP Pro, #2 98SE, #3 Win2K. #'s 1 and 2 will share a parallel port printer.

There are no significant differences between most of the Entry level Cable/DSL Routers.

Conventional Wisdom claims: The Routing Trinity.

1. Netgear RT314
2. Barricade 7004ABR
3. Linksys BEFSR41

Some Routers have an additional Printer Server, and DialUp Modem input for backup.

I would choose the one that has the features that fit the way you use the
Internet (and may be it is on sale).

Table comparing these Routers.

I have that router and it's pretty good. I like the print server and the fall-back dial-up connection port.

I just got a Netgear RT314 and I really like it.. fixed all my problems with networking for internet, file sharing, printer sharing and it works very well. Just be sure to update the firmware to the latest version, and they have very good update support. The nicest benefit of a router IMHO is the fact that I dont have to have my system running to share internet with my client computer (my daughter)
Energy and wear and tear savings will more than pay for itself in no time.

I have one of these Barricades, and three systems, two are Win 2k now and one is XP. I think it's great. My only complaint is that there isn't any logging of attempts to get in from the outside. The print server is great and was the major reason I chose the barricade over any others.

enjoy it!

I had some probs with my smc freezing, and requiring a hard reset every couple of days. For some strange reason, it hasn't happened in the last couple weeks so I can't give a full explanation as to why it was occurring. just hope it doesn't come back cause it was a pain.

I have the Barricade wireless version and it's been great. Be advised that the print server feature does not support 4-in-one printers, but from what I can figure that's industry standard.

Some version of the SMC 7004ABR has problem with locks up/froze that requires hard reset, just like Uthiroid said. If i remember correctly, there's like 4 different 7004ABR, and the newer one might have firmware update that address the issue.

Thanks for the input. The wireless looks tempting but I have to get 3 NICs too.

The netgear rt314 routers are being dicontinued. I've been trying to find them in Vancouver canada but places are out of them.

I have the SMC, and I like it a lot. It was fairly easy to set up. The only gripe I have is that I have to access the setup page through netscape....in both Linux and Windows.

I have this router and it's been great for me. Mine had some freezing issues until I upgraded it to the latest firmware, has been running flawless since. Right now I have 4 machines hooked into it. 2 through the ports on the router itself and the other 2 through a hub attached into the router. It runs great, but like others said, the logging feature is kind of slim, but it doesn't detract that much from it. If your looking to buy it, go for it.

No the RT314 doesnt have the print server, I just network the printers via file and printer sharing. I was told the D Link DI 704P was about the best for the home user in price and quality if you want print server onboard.

I have the same router smc. I had many problems in the network when the cable modem was changed to Dynamci from static IP. I called SMC, they replaced modems, and now everything works.

Always update the firmware. If that doesn't work, call SMC.

I really like this router better than linksys/netgear because:
  • It was the cheapest
  • Print Server built in
  • Great support

Highly recommended

Do cable companies charge more for a static IP? Does ATT give you a choice?

Anybody with barricade tried DMZ?
Somehow I can't make it work.
I mean I can't ping servers(that I can if I'm connected directly) .
Maybe even somebody figured out a way to run netmeeting through it?

Can anyone else verify this? I don't want to install netscape.

I believe the RP114 is the replacement for the RT314, that is at least what they have been saying at www.broadbandreports.com. It's a lot smaller than the RT314 and RT311.
