hmm, only supports mpeg1 or mpeg2 up to 4mbps. Seems like a decent price considering it has 802.11g built-in, but its pretty restrictive on what formats it can play.

This is the cheapest way I've come up with yet to get my MP3's to my stereo from my computer wireless, but just pretty much a newbie

Since this unit seems to have some limitions... What is a good good alternatives? My house is fully networked with Cat 5e so wireless is not needed... Seems like a possibly good way to spread some DVB goodness around the house.

If you are already wired (and even if you aren't), I'd go for this one:

Go-Video Networked DVD Player (D-2730) - $107 from the above site.
You can add a pcmia wireless card to it also, but it doesn't come with it.

Modded xbox is also an option.

There is also the Hauppauge MediaMVP, which can be had for as low as $88. It doesn't play dvds like the above does, but if that isn't a problem this one is much simpler. You can't add wireless to it though (without using a bridge). And supposedly the playback quality isn't as good. But its the cheapest and it has support integrated into a couple of the pc pvr applications like gbpvr and I think sage.

I'm actually looking into doing the same type of thing. I'm leaning towards a modded xbox with X-box media center running. Its the most complicated to set up, but I think offers the most functionality. Price would be cost of an xbox + $50 or whatever for the modchip + whatever time/effort it takes to solder the modchip on and figure out how to configure the thing.

But overall the govideo one is the best option for out-of-the-box functionality.

I have the Hauppauge MediaMVP. Pretty good system. Cost about $65 a few months ago. Now plays Mpgeg1,2, DivX and Xvid, WMV, Internet Radio, MP3, Pictures. Plays movies even at very high rates. The good thing is they are constantly upgrading firmware, putting more functions and codecs on it.
