Smelly Shoes?

I recently had some shoes completely soaked in a downpour, now the shoes smell awful, and it has been weeks. It is not my feet, because none of the same smells exists in my sneakers or loafers. The problem is especially bad because I am tall and when I cross my legs in class, my neighbors suffer due to one shoe being brought much closer to their faces as well as mine.

The shoes have plenty of life left in them, what can I do to remedy the situation?

This has always worked for me.
I think it needs to be emphasized that washing gets rid of the smell, but properly drying them (completely drying them) is the key to them not smelling again.

sometimes i let it soak for few hours in soapy water or with detergent (depending on the shoes) then air dry it on the boiler in the laundry room instead of putting it in the dryer

Hmm, good idea, I wondered if washing might make them smell worse due to the greater infiltration of water

Dear Sir:

Thank you for your interest in our Allen-Edmonds Shoes.

Mold growth is likely to happen whenever the conditions are right. All it needs is moisture, which could be from wet sidewalks, but usually it is from foot perspiration. Warmth, and Bacteria which is everywhere. There are a couple of things you can do to help avoid this. First of all don't wear your shoes every day. Your shoes should have at least 24 if not 48 hours to dry between wearing. Secondly, don't put the shoe trees in right away after you take the shoes off. Let most of the moisture evaporate from the shoes before placing the trees inside. Also, make sure the trees you have are made of an unfinished wood. The trees are designed to Absorb any moisture that may be left in the leather as well as keeping the shape of the shoe.

It is however important to get all of the mold out of the shoe, and also disinfect them to kill any bacteria that may still be lurking inside. If you wish, you may use a simple solution of .25 cup vinegar, .25 cup baking soda, and one cup water. Mix up the solution and pour equal amounts into both shoes, swish it around and dump it out. Let the shoes air dry, then wipe out with a damp cloth and let dry before wearing.

Sincerely,

Tina Lemanski

If I had thought of this earlier, I may have at least got my fingers wet at my senior prom

washing machine.

do your clothes smell worse after water?

take out the bits that come out, laces, the pads etc.

if its really funky maybe let it go through two cycles.

if you need drying they sell mesh bags that strap sneakers to the inside of the dryer door so they don't need to bounce around inside a moving dryer which is not good at all.

air dry tends to work though.

in any case u need several pairs of shoes to give enough drying time so smells don't build up from stuff always being damp.
