Smoke from my scanner! Fixable?

Since my printer and scanner are next to each other, i didnt notice i was using my printer plug for my scanner. The printers plug is 30V @ 500mA vs scanners which is 12V @ 1.25A if that matters. How likely would it be repairable? After opening it, theres 1 warped resistor but rest seem fine. No pix till i get my cam back today.

You might be okay, but it's probably best that someone with an electronics bent handles this one.

If you're lucky, that resistor gave its life to protect the rest of the circuit. If you're not, other stuff died and you will probably need a new scanner. Or make a Scanner PC like I did with an old scanner....

One time, back in the 486 days, when I knew very little about computers, I confused a CD-ROM audio cable with a floppy drive power cable.
The sound card smoked and died, but the rest of the PC lived.

check if both are dc, my printer takes ac and if yours is ac too and the scanner is dc you can pretty much forget it, no chance. if both are dc and the same polarity you *might* get lucky but the odds are against it for an approx 2X overvolt. opposite polarity with dc is also pretty bad, also usually another big time no go.

if you can figure out the value of the resister (might be printed on the board) its a cheap fix so go for it. post pics and maybe we can figure it out.

I label all my power bricks and plugs with tape and I write the name of the hardware on it, I have waaay to many plugs and power adapters lying around..

You'll probably going to need a new scanner! If the resistor burned and instead of a fuse (which you would think is installed) most like the circuit card is also dead.

Well as a resistor costs only pence, then it's worth trying a swap to see if it will ever scan again!

It's the Magic Smoke. Once you let the Magic Smoke out of the parts, they stop working.

Seriously, it depends on the circuit. Whether or not it's repariable is anyone's guess.

Ah, but the good manufactures pack them *extra full* of the Magic Smoke so sometimes they can leak a bit out and still be OK. Did it look like the good Magic Smoke or cheap Magic Smoke? Also I think they have Self Sealing Magic Smoke now, how old is that scanner anyways?

Seriously Id give it a shot, its a 10 cent part and a few minutes time. I wouldnt have high hopes though.
