Gosh, I'm overwhelmed.

I did have a stoke. My entire right side went numb from my leg to my jaw. I handled the situation much better than I would have thought. Never got scared. Had the state of mind that I knew I'm going to move on one of these days and a stroke was one of those possibilites. Just doing the best you can each day is quite comforting ... what will be, will be.

After the episode I immediately got my wife to get out the Merck Medical Reference and we quickly diagnosed what was going on before we ever left for the hospital. What a time for this to happen. Most of the area hospitals are either destroyed or crippled by Hurricane Katrina.

Update: Things are getting better. I need to create some new connections between my brain and my right leg and right arm. The numbness in my leg and in my right jaw have almost completely gone away. Only my right arm still feels a little numb. Sounds like a little physical re-programming is needed ... no big deal for an AnandTecher, right!

Though I haven't officially gotten the word, the medical technician who gave me the ultrasound scan of my carotid artery told me things looked pretty good.

Sounds like I need to start taking an aspirin a day to thin the blood, lose weight, lower chlorestral, and get my body in better shape. Can do.

I'm now pestering the hell out of the nurses to get in touch with my doctor and get my discharge papers lined up. This room is needed by others a lot more than me. (Besides, it's Monday Night Football and the hospital has no TV). lol

Getting the well wishes and prayers from all of you has made me tear-up, again. I wish I could get/give a big hug from/to each of you. Dang, that sounds kinda mushy ... getting soft in my old age.

You all are not rid of me yet.

Hi Greg,
It is nice hearing from you. And it is good to hear that you will take care more ...
Please Greg, take it easy on the stress - concentrate on getting well in small steps, but take them often.
I know that a stroke is a very tiring experience. You will need the energy also later. So save some - you may need it.
So: no matter what, you are and will be in our prayers. That can not be helped. We like you too well for anything else.
Best regards, get well, and God bless!

Aspirin and some flavor of statins, welcome to the club

Is the blood pressure OK? Long term stress can push that dangerously high which is an additional risk factor... All part of ripening

Sorry to hear you had a stroke, but as strokes go, sounds like it was a mild one. take er easy, follow the doctors orders, quit pestering those nurses......on second thought, never mind on that one , and before long, you'll be back up to speed.

*hug* back at ya, you take care!

Continued prayers your way!

Hey Greg, I don't know you well, but judging by what I've always read in your posts, or posts where you have been mentioned, you seem like an exceptional guy and a huge asset to AT... So I give you my very best wishes.

Hope everything turns out well (sounds like things are already on the up and up!!) and you and family are doing fine through this scary spell!

Keep us posted!

Cheers,
Craig

Sorry for the massively belated reply (I've been really busy ), but glad to hear you're ok, Greg. Was never worried about you checking out. I think you just wanted a vacation.

Best wishes and prayers for you, Greg.

Nor do we want to be rid of you! This is good news!

I will be glad to send you some St. Joseph aspirin Also, if you need a workout partner, let me know and I will come up a few weekends and get you going

Whatever you do though, take it easy for awhile. I know you have that drive to do things and get them done so focus on doing what your doctor says and getting that done. Let others deal with the Katrina fallout. That is why you hire labor

It's really great to hear from you Greg. I'm glad things sound relatively OK.

Get well soon but take as long as you need. Don't hurry things too much.

Holy Chowder...... I am saddened at the news, but happy that you are doing well Greg!

My wife is an OT and wants me to remind you to listen to what your therapist tells you now! LOL

Glad to hear your doing well Smoke. Just wished I had saw this post earlier.

Keep us all informed on what's going on. A fellow Anandtecher in the hospital is never a good thing.

Hang in there...

Glad to hear some more good news (relatively speaking) from you Greg. Take it easy down there. Stressful times can play hell with the body. One step at a time...

GREAT NEWS Greg! Glad to hear that it wasn't as bad as it could have been.
Follow your PT's instructions to a tee, it will help you get back as soon as possible.
You will grow to hate that dang PT, but their job is most important now...

Great to see you posting again....
Many prayers sent your way..

I received a PM from Smoke and he suggested I share the information in this thread.

It seems I was a little premature yesterday when I wrote my leg and face were no longer numb. It appears I am quite numb on the entire right side of my body. However, I do have control of my right arm and right leg so even if I have to live like this, it is most acceptable to the alternative.

Please feel free to update the "thread" with this info. I seem to be a little on the weak side and I don't think I can respond to each individual PM and e-mail I have received. I appreciate all of the communications of sympathy and good wishes.

Thank you and all of the TeAm for really being part of my immediate family.

Greg

Continued prayers for our good friend!
