This will only work if you are currently NOT in a contract with SprintPCS:

<edit> People are reporting that this will work if you are currently in contract. You just need to threaten that you will switch to another provider when your contract is over </edit>

1) Use SprintPCS phone to dial *2 (or sprint customer service on a landline).
2) Tell Clair that you would like to speak with somebody about cancelling your service.
3) Once connected to a service cancellation rep, tell them you're fed up with dropped calls, bad coverage, and better rates from other providers.
4) Emphasize that you are not currently in contract with them.
5) Listen to the deals they offer to keep you. Myself and a friend were both offered these(YMMV):

650 anytime national + 2000 nights/weekends national for $35.99/month
OR
1000 anytime national + 3000 nights/weekends national for $49.99/month

6) Tell them you would like a free month of service to think about it.
7) Tell them you hate your phone and want a new one. They will offer $30 credit towards new phone(whether you buy one or not).
8) Call back after your *FREE* month and switch to one of the plans listed above...unless they have better plans by then!

I'm currently on my second free month and then I'll probably choose the 650 anytime plan. Beats the hell out of my current 500 anytime/2000 nights/weekend plan that costs $49.99/month.

Remember if you've had your current plan for a while, your night minutes probably start at 8pm. If you switch plans, they'll start at 9pm (their current policy).

Choose wisely...

I've had Sprint PCS since November or December 99. I never had a contract with them, and my current plan (no longer offered) is 300 Anytime minutes for $30.00. While that sounds like it sucks, I also still get my 1st incoming minute free, which is sort of an incentive.

In any case, when you switched plans, did you have to enter into a new contract, or did they just switch you to the new plan? Also, did you have any other fees, like activation or change plan fees?

I wouldn't mind changing plans if I got substantially more minutes to even out the loss of the 1st incoming min. free deal.

Not with me. I changed plans after they changed the nights to 9pm but I whined about it so she put me on a new plan (more minutes less money) with the 8pm cut off. Never hurts to ask!

It's true.. cell phone companies are like credit card companies in this regard. Both are desperate to keep your business, so if you call up customer service and say you're thinking of switching to one of their competitors, they'll bend over backwards to keep you as a customer. A 5 minute phone call to Citibank got my APR dropped from 24.9% to 9.9%, and I did the same thing with Sprint PCS to get on a better plan, though not quite as good as the ones described here. Make those companies work for your business!

Actually I called to cancel mine last month and they offered me their emergency plan which is 50 minutes of local time for $9.99 a month. That's pretty sweet for somebody that only carries a phone for "sometimes I need a phone uses".

Of course this plan is completely worthless for the average girl or that one guy in the movie theater that always sits behind me and has to tell "his dawgs" where he's at.

Sprint PCS is pretty good here in Iowa. I like the fact that the phones are all (mostly) dual band and smallish form factor, no ridiculous huge, bulky analog add-on adapters. Nonetheless, even with the 600 anytime package (59.99) I find myself running out of minutes. So I'm using them in combination with an unlimited local calling plan from VoiceStream.

Keep in mind that these "unpublished" rates are only good if you are not under a contract, which most of us (unfortunately) are. And switching plans, as others have mentioned, will move your night/weekend (off-peak) time forward to 9pm (instead of 7 or 8, whichever you might have from a grandfathered plan). You'll also lose the first incoming minute free, etc. if your old plan had that option(s). Also, your contract is extended for a full year from the date you switch plans, so be wise.

<<With Cingular I get my first incoming minute free. >>

<<I also still get my 1st incoming minute free>>

With Nextel ALL my incoming minutes are free, and for $69.99 I get 500 outgoing minutes. Since I receive more calls than I make I've never paid anything extra. Of course there's no roaming & no long distance charge anywhere in the US. It's also loaded with all the usual features.

The more I see the amount of fine print and maneuvering that needs to be done to get a good deal on cell phones, the more I'm glad I have Nextel.

Which is great. Thanks again.

Good tip! Did you guys know that this also works with credit card companies? I always get a couple of % points dropped when I call and threaten to cancel the card because I'm getting a better rate somewhere else. I love saving $$$$$!!

hot deals are legitimate, this is not...

what's the point of paying ANYTHING in life if you can just argue, steal, or kill for it...

How is this not a hot deal? It's called bartering. They want to keep your business, they don't want you to go to a competitor.
Especially if your a long time customer.

Thanks for the hot deal.

I can't get a job at Sprint because I failed the "I'm not a complete f'n moron screening"!

I loved my Sprint phone and service but they screwed up my bill so many times and everytime I called them I felt like I was talking to the wall. It's the only customer service line where you'd RATHER talk to the automated voice prompts then an actual person.

Thanks for the info on the Unpublished SprintPCS Rates, just called in and got myself the 650 anytime and 3000 night and weekend, with long distance and my off-peak will start at 8pm.. All for $35.99 and any addictinal minutes is $0.30 instead of $0.35.. .. Finally , now I can pickup my incoming calls, (many many incoming call).. , ,, Oh, this also works too even if you already signed a contract with them, just tell them you're thinking of cancelling when the contract is over. .. ..

BruinBill, I feel sorry for you. If you're not willing to negotiate for better prices, you must waste LOADS of money paying retail price for cars, getting the highest interest rates on credit cards, etc. I'm surprised you even bother reading these threads, since your line of thinking makes most of the deals posted here just WRONG.

I have to say at least the Connecticut/New Jersey area, Sprint is possibly the worst cell phone provider ever. Numerous dropped calls, seldom get a good signal...I can live with it but if I had to do it over again I would definitely choose another carrier.
