Here's what I scored:

600 anytime and 3000 off peak for $29.99 a mo. (up from 250 anytime and 1250 off peak for $34.99)

CONTINUED 8pm off peak start time

1 free month of service and a new annual contract with a $50. cancellation fee

Not too shabby IMO

...and courtjester, there is nothing wrong with negotiating a new contract with any service provider. If they didn't want to do it or thought it wrong or illicit, they wouldn't! That simple. Robbery it is not....bartering it is. There was no lying or cheating involved. I would have switched since my previous plan who's contract was up this month was pathetic with all the other carrier plans out there that carried heftier minutes for the money.

It should work with any major carrier. There is a thread going with people that tried it successfully at ATT too. It never hurts to ask. Tell them you can get a better deal elsewhere and won't hesitate switching. Of course, it might not work if you're in the middle of your contract.

Man, I was feeling good about getting a 650/3000 for $35.99 deal until you got 600/3000 for $29.99.

<< DanielNTX,

How in the world were you able to get a $300 credit towards a new phone. What exactly did you tell the CS? that's insane. What service plan did you have before and how long were you a customer for.
>>

I just asked. I've been a customer since late '98. I was on the $50 500 minute Free & Clear plan with FIMF.

Anyone switching plans in the middle of their cycle, be warned, I did this twice and everytime Sprint would automatically extend my contract for one year and charge me $150 for breaking the last contract. It was total crap, happend two time, took 20 mins to straighten out each time. In the end I got rid of my phone because of stupid sh!i like this.

<< anyone try with Cingular? >>

<rant>
i did. here is an excerpt of my conversation about 3 weeks ago:

"me: i've been getting a lot of system busy messages for the last year or so, during supposed "off-peak" hours, and i'm fed up. could i speak with your retention department?

female rep: huh?

me: i'm considering cancelling my service...i'm no longer on contract and i might want to switch to verizon. is there any way you can help me?

female rep: well, i can offer you 50 free anytime minutes.

me: yes, i've gotten about 3 offers from the last times i've called. there's no point in more minutes when i can't dial through. is that all you can do?

female rep: i can help you cancel your service.

me: ok...well i'll just call in at the end of the month when my billing cycle is up. thanks..."

i'm in the ucla area so anybody near there knows how bad cingular can be. it's horrible. for me, i'm still on the old PC120 plans...120 anytime, unlimited mtm. my contract was up in december and i'm not ready to be tied up in another yearlong contract. that's the ONLY reason i'm still with cingular. verizon is supposedly reallly good on campus and sprint and att are decent....but i'm a gsm fan and i'm patiently waiting for voicestream and att gsm to launch...i'm not sure i can wait that long.. apparently, cingular has no dedicated retention department...their customer service generally sucks (of the 100 or so times i've spoke with them, only 2 or 3 have been knowledgeable and friendly.), and their service is way below par. though last week when i called, the rep told me upgrades near my area are slated...but there is no timeframe available except "during the year."

it's fine for their company. why does cingular need to keep their customers when they can just lure in new ones with enticing plans--numerically, cingular is the cheapest per minute of talk time. now with free nationwide long distance, it looks almost perfect on paper. but unless people do their research and discover cingular's "swiss cheese service footprint", a lot of people are/will be sucked in...and then screwed.

Called Sprint Customer Care, here is the deal I received:

Little history. My contract had ended couple months ago. On 500 anytime/1500 nights-weekend (@8pm, not 9pm) for $50 with Long Distance and all the other stuff. Called asked to speak with the RETENTIONS department direct number is 888-298-9547. They are they ones that you can negotiate plans with. After 45-1hr of complaining the CSR gave me the 1000 anytime/ 3000 nights & weekends (starting at 8pm) also added the FIRST INCOMING MINUTE FREE for ALL calls. Also, I complained about my TimePort phone and she sent me a NEW Sanyo 4700 phone retails $149 for free. I then took the phone to sprint store and exchanged it for the Sanyo 5150 (now this is a bad A** phone). She also signed me up for 3 free months of Wireless WEB and download service for ringers and wallpaper pics for the Sanyo 2" Color LCD . This phone is awsome, the color and larger screen lets me brouse the internet much faster. Good luck with your negotiating. I told them that AT&T was the company that I was planning to switch with. Mind you I have been a Sprint PCS customer for about three years and my average months usage is 1500-2000 minutes. It is my primary phone.

I was ready to switch service, I've been happy with Sprint, overall, but cost was too high. I'll be calling in tomorrow or Monday and getting one of these deals. One other nicety about having Sprint is you can get their land LD version for 7c/min no fee 24/7. That's a good rate when you need the home phone. I generally use my cel for LD though, but it still comes in handy at home. Thanks to all for the heads up!

dshodson: I had the 8500 and just got the new samsung a400. It is a very good phone. I get much better reception, and it is the replacement for the 8500.

After days of talking to sprint, complaining about their service, thier systems being down, and reps offering me deals they could not get, I ended up scoring a $30 phone credit, a free month of service, 650 anytime, 3000 night/weekend minutes starting at 8 pm, and wireless web on two phones: one already on a contract, and the other was not. I did need to sign a one year contract on both phones. The wireless web took me a bit to get b/c they could not configure it on my phone with the new plan, but somehow they did.

I figure within a year, 3G should be up and rates for it should be somewhat affordable.

well without putting much effort (or thought) into it, a 5 min phone call got my plan increased from 350 to 500 anytime and 3650 offpeak min @ 39.99, i told them i would think about their offer and give them a call back, so i'll prbably call back later and just try lowering the monthly payment and i think i'll be all set. cool deal :Q

Well, I took the plunge today and here is what I got...

500/3000 minutes w/ N&W starting at 8 p.m. for $35/month ($5 less than what I'm paying now). Also, they gave me a $30 service credit along with a free month so I can get a new phone. The CSR I spoke to was Julia and she was EXTREMELY nice about everything.

Be sure that if you get an upgrade and it goes very smoothly and easily, ask for a supervisor and brag on them. They scratch you back, the least we can do is scratch theirs.

<< This will only work if you are currently NOT in a contract with SprintPCS:

Am I missing something here? How can I cancel my service if I'm not in a contract?

Even if you're not in a contract, they still bill you month-to-month until you cancel your service.

Also forgot to add. My current contract wasn't due to expire till August, but they changed me over with no penalty. New contract goes from April 2002 -> March 2003...

I fought and fought and this is all I could get....

Good or bad?

I get 20% off normal plan rates because of a deal between Sprint and my employer. The rates below are before the 20% gets factored in. I actually talked to the "business retention" and not the "consumer retention" department. They wouldn't give me the other deals mentioned here, although they were aware of those plans, because they were consumer plans. I could have done those but lost my 20%. I was happy with what they gave me so I did the following deal.

FYI, I had to sign up for another year, but I was told I could switch plans anytime. I am just aggreeing to stay with Sprint another year, which I would have anyway, but not necessary the particular plans I chose

Original Plan:
$84.99 1000 anytime, 2000 night and weekend
$20.00 add-a-phone charges
-----------------
$105.00 total

After Calling:
Phone 1: $59.99, 900 anytime, 5400 night and weekend, wireless web
Phone 2: $29.99, 200 anytime, 2800 night and weekend
------------------
$90.00 total

Credits Received:
$30 for each phone
One free month
-------------------
$150 total

Summary of changes
---------------------------:
Save $15 a month
$150 credit
+free wireless web on one phone
+100 anytime minutes
+6200 night and weekend minutes
