I bought the 5 lb end and pieces, it's much worse than I expected. They are not even shreds, many of them are size of biscuit clumps. I threw away at least 1/4 of the bag because they are too small to be eatable. The rest of them are like the size of the little finger's nail. Too small for human, good for pet. Taste is acceptable.

That product is called Very Fine (size), "Good Addition to soups and stews." You should have expected small pieces.

Oberto's is pretty good but big john's jerky was awesome, a little on the expensive side but awesome.

I dont even like oberto but can't beat $5/lb shipped.

The dryer the jerky the better. That's why I dont like oberto or bridgeford, too wet and too damn much connective tissue (especially in bridgeford). Pemmican is the best easy to find jerky, tender but also dry and so easy to tear it's almost crumbly... but you occasionally get a bad bag.

Zikronix, what cuts of beef are you getting for 30-50cents a pound? Cause jerky is ~ 20-30% of origional meat weight if I remember right.

That's odd. I think the JackLinks brand is awful (way too hard/dry) and find the Costco stuff the best as far as taste and price ratio. It's $10 per pound BTW.

Of course I'll take Pemmican over both of them but it's so hard to find it cheap. Best I've found is about $1 per ounce.

the best jerky i've found is the wal-mart brand peppered. probably not as "distinguished" as the "fancy" kind, but it's cheap as hell and chingonlicious

that said, I think i'll jump on this for my wife

The oberto beef teryaki bits and ends 1lb bag is crap. Tasteless, texture of chewing fat, sticks. Waste of money, just buy the 8oz-1lb bags at walmart/etc stores for like $8 a lb.

The price on the slab jerkey is reasonable. Might be a decent way to go if your going to order it. If price isn't an issue, go here

http://store.smokedmeats.com/beefjerky1.html

The Cowboy jerkey is incredible as well as the slab and Indian. It's all good. They do mail order, it's a a must stop for those of you driving up Hiway 395 from L.A. to Mammoth or Lake Tahoe

I dont know why others put this jerky down. I got a slab for $6.99 on clearance, 2 boxes of 24 each of jalapeino peperoni for $6, and 3 bags of shreded for $9 (thats a pound and a half for you counting at home) and I am in heaven!

The slab is full of flavor, the sticks are too but really hot, and the shreaded isnt fatty but excelent in flavor and texture. I dont have to keep chewing it breaks up nicely and with all the different flavors tastes so good.

Thank you op they are my new place to get from with thoes crazy prices and taste!

Bridgeford or Great Value is the best jerky $ can buy and the cheapest too! This Oberto stuff is crap and shipping costs really kill the deal.

I disagree. I bought a bag of Great Value Teryiaki the other day, and it is rubbery and totally inedible. The texture is really strange. I find Oberto much more palatable. I ordered four bags of the BBQ Beef Jerky from the closeouts section of their online store, and I couldn't be happier with it.

Man what kind of "meat" are you using? I know I spend a lot more than that when I've made it. Beef even on sale is a few bucks a pound for a decent lean cut. And dehydrated weighs ALOT less than when it was bought. There there's the cost for the marinade. I don't see making jerky for $1.50 a pound...

BTW, Thanks OP! I love jerky!

Edit - I did a little searching to see for myself. FDA facts on water in meats

Meat and poultry is composed of muscle, connective tissue, fat and bone. People eat meat for the muscle. The muscle is approximately 75% water...

So for the sake of simplicity let's say you remove all the water from the meat. I know you won't but I don't want to figure it out either. That means 4 pounds of meat for 1 pount of jerky. A little high, I'm sure so we'll round down for easy numbers - 3 pounds raw meat for pound of jerky. Let's say we're going to make 10 pounds of jerky. You're total budget is $15.00 (10x1.50). $5 for ingredients for the marinade - I think that may be low, but don't remember, and don't have my marinade recipe in front of me. So that's $10 for the meat. You'll need 30 pounds of meat though... So show me where you're buying lean (fat in jerky isn't real good) beef for $0.34 a pound?
