I love this thread.

I didn't engine brake at all, maybe I should have. I doubt it would have helped....I dove into this corner way too fast.

I didn't exactly slam them, I just kind of...well let's say that I like to brake very late for corners, and use them very hard, lol.

BZZZZZZT!

Oh, sorry. Wrong answer. Never said that. Didn't even imply it.

why would i stop if i've smoked my Hawk HPS pads many times and my car is still stopping fine. probably better than many other cars with stock pads and rotors.

So you upgraded your braking components and you are proud that your car stops better than one with stock parts?

Hawk HPS smoke is superior to stock smoke when it's rolling out of your front wheel wells.

because in the best interest of anyone reading this thread, they will end up listening to ZV and not you, and not kill themselves.

taking your brakes beyond their service temperature, clearly evident by smoking, is *never* good. hell, i'd start getting worried at brake fade, let alone smoke.

when you overclock your PC, and your room temps get a few degrees warmer than other rooms in the house, is that out of the "norm"? I know for a fact that my room can be at least 2 degrees warmer than my neighboring room, just because i have so much heat dumping out of my computer case. If you're going to argue that overclocking my computer is "out of the norm" then you're registered for the wrong forum; this is anandtech =)

now, back to brakes. if your brakes get hot and excess heat from friction is created from the pads squeezing against rotors, that just means the driver was pushing the pads hard; which he was.

Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. What is this? Some sort of attempt at getting into the Guinness Book of Records for the largest number of asinine analogies posted by a single user in an automotive thread?

Seriously, please, for your own safety and the safety of everyone else on the road, never, ever, under any circumstances attempt to perform any maintenance whatsoever on an automobile. In your case, I'd even recommend that you use full-service gas stations.

I'm sorry this thread got off topic, but the fact of the matter is, anyone who thinks smoking brake pads are normal doesn't have a clue what they are talking about. And good show ZV.

LOUISSSSS needs a mod edit in all of his posts before someone gets seriously hurt by taking his advice.

Out of curiousity, is it wrong, that I nearly always engine brake as well as using the brakes?

It's the way I was taught and it is what I've always done (unless in an emergency stop situation obviously; they are not fun - brown trouser time).

I also usually down change through the gears rather than block change (again not in an emergency stop).

This question comes up once a month, it's just dependant on driving style. It's not bad.

Thanks crazySOB297.

Edit: Surely the OP must have experienced brake fade long before the brakes started to smoke.

At least with smoking brakes your car doubles up as a BBQ (sorry I couldn't resist).

Another, but sensible edit this time. They had a clip on Richard Hammond's Engineering Connections (episode: Taipei 101 - Size is Important) where the brakes on a race car (I forget which racing category it was in), got so hot that the wheel arches caught fire. I'm not suggesting that this would happen to a normal everyday car, but I was still surprised that this could happen.
