You might be kidding, but calling this cold is pretty harsh. Add up the cost of the components and it'd be hard to beat that price by too much on a home-built system.

A 1.7ghz P4 is about $210 at Newegg. Add in $80 for the HD, $75 for the MB, $100 for OEM Windows XP, and $100 for the rest (video, sound, memory, CD-rom, etc.) and you are at $565 at least, not including shipping, and you've still got to BUILD the damn thing.

So it might not be quite as low as you can build a system, but I wouldn't call it 'cold'...

I didn't see anything in the title, like....

"Smoking deal for system builders,.... "

So, your "intent" and actions seem to contradict themselves, don't they????

I think an "edit" might be in order....

I got brochures today from dell sm business after previously ordering a system for family... Ive been watching for another dell deal (big family with ancient machines) but no coupon code on my brochure
The free shipping must be a new offer (again) as a few days ago I couldnt see any free ship offers on a system from the site...

The coupon code is a one time use code . Check your brochure again just in case you missed it. The code is next to the customer number on the back of the brochure. There is also a reference to the promotion on the first page of the brochure.

I got a dell Brochure today but don't have a customer number or coupon code. My name and address on it is right though. I guess this isn't for everyone.

Thanks GetReal and honestabe, it looks like dell is doing some controlled promotions for only part of their mailing list.My catalog has no code at all by the customer number nor any mention on the first page... other companies do this as well and I bet besides that our catalogs are identical.Guess im out of luck on getting that code because I wasnt chosen as a test guinea pig!

Maybe I should have change the title to "Smoking! Dell $75 off coupon in mail /stackable (except Err)

Well I compare this deal to the last Dell P4 1.5 gig with the free palm offer.

This deal starts with a faster cpu 1.6 vs 1.5, a 40 gig u/100 7200rpm harddrive vs a 20 gig, and instead of the palm you get a choice of dvd/cdrw or Lexmark all in one. Sure this cost a little more then the last combo deal but considering the newer hardware specs it works out. With ebates it comes to about $580 which ain't too bad considering the free shipping and one year on site warranty plus windows xp.

This deal is pretty good for guys who want to buy a cheap system (cheap means with SDRAM). But I guess most ATers will consider DDR system, no matter AMD or Intel.

Cold for me, at least. If $75 off is for accessory, it will be smoking!

I'm with jtallon. The days of being able to build systems for less than you can buy one are over.

Dell pays much less for the parts than you can and they don't make a whole helluva lot of money on units like these (but they sure try to make up for it on shipping). System building will live on since it's the only way to go if you're a tinkerer, plan on upgrading parts at various times, or just plain want the hottest components. For the vast majority of home and business users that consider a computer to be a static box it simply makes no sense to build a PC - much less buy one from some no-name generic system builder.

Considering the fact that you get support, legitimate software, quality components, a WARRANTY, easily attainable drivers & bios upgrades you simply can't touch this deal with a home-brew clone.

It goes without saying that if you build your own systems you won't be buying anything name-brand like this. If someone posted a hot deal on condoms would you feel the need to chime in and say it's a cold deal for you since you practice the rhythm method?

Here's a dumb question that I didn't see asked before.

With the 1.6 and 1.7 GHz machines, are they giving you a socket 423 or a socket 478 CPU? One of the reasons I didnt buy a dell before is that nowhere on their site (for the RAMBUS machines) did I see that they were using 478 vs 423. I was afraid with the 1.6 deals earlier that they were unloading older CPUs/motherboards which would prevent upgradability in the future.

Thanks!
