Doesn't seem such a "cold" deal to me and I am a tinkerer. The last complete computer that I bought was in 1979 (that's NOT a
typo either).

I have always built my own and probably always will. However I wouldn't knock this deal too much. If you do not have the wherewithall or the inclination to build your own then it it not such a bad deal. Most of us tinkerers would end up spending as much
if not more. Figure a MB at 150, 1.7 CPU, 512 Meg memory, HD and it adds up there very quickly.

these dell systems are pretty good. I am a professional technician...working somewhere. The p4 cpu are just too expensive to buy yourself and the offbrand (not intel) motherboard are just gonna give u problems although u eventually will fix it. ITs a hot deal if i had that much money.

New poll: vote for a new "~~~~ THREADCRAPPING ~~~~" thread.

Seriously, so many people think they are God's gift to the forum, junior mods, style-council or whatever. They poop on threads just because they aren't interested or it isn't a deal for them (or they have a lot of time on their hands). Just make a thread at the top like B&M, then everyone who feels like they have to shovel it all over legit deals can do it over there. Let the real Mods do their job.

Sheesh.

It looks like there are two brochures that went out. One for people that bought through the home store and the other from small business. The one I got was definitely for Small business which explains why some people found the coupon code and others did not. The code is a one time code and expired as soon as I used it. If you purchased through Small Business you will probably be getting a code so don't throw it out. The coupon is good for some time.

honestabe, thanks for the heads up on the coupon code.
The only issue I have with 4300S as opposed to 4300 is the Power Supply. It is 180W vs 250W in 4300.

Correct me if I am wrong...Is the 4300s much less upgradable than the 4300? It appears to have fewer available bays and card slots.

<<

<< hate to be party popper... but this deal is cold.

It is hot for non-anandtecher, but cold for a system builder like myself.

>>

You might be kidding, but calling this cold is pretty harsh. Add up the cost of the components and it'd be hard to beat that price by too much on a home-built system.

A 1.7ghz P4 is about $210 at Newegg. Add in $80 for the HD, $75 for the MB, $100 for OEM Windows XP, and $100 for the rest (video, sound, memory, CD-rom, etc.) and you are at $565 at least, not including shipping, and you've still got to BUILD the damn thing.

So it might not be quite as low as you can build a system, but I wouldn't call it 'cold'...
>>

Agreed, its not nessesarily cold. We all have parents and other non-tech relative that want on the net and this could be a good deal to refer them to. I don't like building systems for other people, because its an endless software support problem once they install AOL, ICQ, get a virus, or what-ever. Let Dell do the front line crap with the software problems.

poo poo! I've only received the Home Systems catalog thusfar. I've spent much at Small Biz too......?

My father-in-law wants something bad and I don't want to support him, I'd like Dell to do the phone support.

<< I'm with jtallon. The days of being able to build systems for less than you can buy one are over.

Dell pays much less for the parts than you can and they don't make a whole helluva lot of money on units like these (but they sure try to make up for it on shipping). System building will live on since it's the only way to go if you're a tinkerer, plan on upgrading parts at various times, or just plain want the hottest components. For the vast majority of home and business users that consider a computer to be a static box it simply makes no sense to build a PC - much less buy one from some no-name generic system builder.
>>

Actually, the point of building your own system (at least for me) is that I get to choose which components go in the box--and I even get to choose what the box is. I'm sure the components Dell uses are fine, but I'd rather know what mobo I have so I know what kind of upgrade paths I have, etc.

Unfortunately thats not how it works.I purchased thru small business recently for a family member, and yesterday recieved the sm. business, and also home catalogs...neither had a code so unless I get one elsewhere there wont be a dell under the tree (to replace their T.Rex that cant do much now)at my brother in laws house since they are on a tight budget. Of course I got appointed to find the hot deal...

I bought a Dell - saved me a lot of time building my own system, and it is the most quiet computer I have ever owned. The case is also remarkably cool - I couldn't buy a case like that anywhere!

Got in on the free Palm m100 deal. Excellent deal!
