Don't forget to use Ebates for about another $30 discount. Just got one. I opted for the 40 gig hard drive as it was faster.

Will this memory work with this computer? It looks really close. Any other good deals on Inspiron 8500 compatible 512 MB SODIMMs. Dell is really expensive on this memory. Thanks.

Hey guys..

plz answer a question from a newbie.

I love this deal with the instant $250 savings, the 10% coupon and then $150 mail-in rebate.

How come none of you went for any extended warranty?
I'm just curious, are these Inspirons reliable.
I'm just anxious about something going wrong after the first year (when most things start to go wrong)

Please let me know,
AJ.

p.s. this is a great community !

I just bought a Insprion 5100 yesterday maxed out for just over $1k with 1 year warranty... the way I figure it is this. If something is going to fail, it's probably going to happen within the first year. If it doesn't, by that time laptops of this same caliber with be so cheap, you could go out and buy a new one with similar specs for the same price of the repair.

So basically, you are spending $300 for a $1k laptop. Doesn't make too much sense to be as after 1 year, the laptop isn't going to be worth much.

THis looks really great.

Any idea why the Dells always Jam the keyboards up against the screen so you are staring at your fingers when you are using the laptop as a tummy top on the hamock?

I was looking at a 16" compaq laptop the other day and they put the keys a little towards middle, really nice but I would never buy another comaq laptop unless it came with a live in repairman.

Heres what I mean:

Compaq 16 inch laptop with an inch or two between keyboard and screen

Dell with keyboard jammed up against sscreen

I'd get 40GB HDD since it's 5400 rpm vs the 30 and 60s 4200rpm - big performance difference for $63

I see they have made their 8200 even bigger. I have a VAIO 16" and it being as big as it is is something I do not like about it. I doubt there will ever been a cheap price on the 600M (just like there were never any on the 4150) but if there are, it is something I would highly consider.

4150 was 1300 AR i guess, cheap for a decent labtop. But i consider 8500 is more attractive because its widescreen + everything else is better.

wow, this is a great deal. I've got an 8200 and really like it.
Just keep in mind this is a desktop replacement so it's pretty hefty.

when does this deal end?
nevermind. 10% off ends tonight.
this is unbelievably tempting. but...

how often does a deal like this show up? i kind of want to wait until summer. but it seems like this deal is too good to pass up...

Is this better than the m600 buy of just a few days ago? If so, I'd like to cancel that and get this instead.

nice laptop and price indeed. and from my recent experience, i'm gonna start buying laptops and pdas with extended warranties. my HP had small issues here and there that were fixed under warranty, but after it expired, it'll shutoff when playing movies with lcd/tv-out, the power connection must be off cause it'll lose power without the battery if the machine is moved. not an extended warranty plan fan, but it seems like the theory of things dying within the first year weren't true for me

Wow. Wish I can upgrade from my Compaq 2800T that I've had for 10 months, I love the laptop to death, but the Radeon 9000 SMOKES the 7500!

I've noticed how much everyone is looking forward to the Radeon 9000... this laptop has the option for the Geforce 4 4200 as well. In the anandtech and tomshardware reviews, the GF4 chip is roughly 30-50% faster than the Radeon 9000. I ordered one a few days ago with the GF4. Of course, the day after it arrives the Radeon 9600 and Geforce FX mobiles will probably be out

i got an 8500 as my first laptop purchase ever and am truly impressed. my boss gave me $2500 to blow so i went all out on it. i got the 2.4 gHz proc., 512 ram, wuxga screen, gf4 4200, 60 gb hdd, 802.11g card, and a bunch of other extras.
this thing got over 11,000 on 3dmark2k1 straight out of the box.
so far no complaints.
