No go....with the base configuration the start price is $1,576.00 .
It's weird how it says the MS works is available only with 1.6 Ghz processors but the selection starts with 1.7GHz.

When did Dell start this "bait and switch " BS ?!

Ok, I found it here: Inspiron 2650 for $1199

Here are the full specs...

Moible Pentium®4 processor,1.7 GHz-M
14.1" XGA
24X Max Variable CD-ROM Drive
128MB 200MHZ 2 DIMMS
16MB DDR 4X AGP NVIDIA GeForce2 Go?Vid
20GB Ultra ATA Hard Drive
Floppy Drive
Microsoft® Windows® XP Home
ntegrated Network Card
Internal 56k Modem
Microsoft®Works Suite 2002 w/ Money 2002
Lithium-Ion Battery
1 Year Limited Warranty plus 1 Year Mail-In Service

Not too bad for under a grand however it only has 128MB RAM (2 dimms) and a CD-ROM. If you upgrade to a CD-RW/DVD and 256MB RAM it will add another $279 bringing the total to $1230.10 shipped after 10% off and $100 Rebate. Good find.

mpjohnst: if you choose 256 mb instead of $100 MIR then it's only increase of $179 (cdrw/dvd combo). no mir.

Nice deal. Almost ordered but caught myself in time (thought of student loans), but someone else I know might be interested. Does this deal work even if you aren't with a small business?

It looks like you can bump the ram to 256 megs for free....am I missing something? I went through and selected 256 instead because it said it was some "special offer", and the price didn't change.

Actually, you'd probably be best off doing the following...

Inspiron 2650 $1199.00
CD-RW/DVD $ 179.00
Sub-Total $1378.00
10% off -$ 137.80
$100 MIR -$ 100.00
Dell Total $1140.20

Then get 256MB DDR Notebook Memory from Pricewatch (1 dimm) for ~$75 shipped.
Replace one of the 64MB dimms that comes with it with this one making a total of 320MB of RAM.
Ebay 64MB DDR dimm for ~$15.

Grand Total ~$1200 with CD-RW/DVD and 320MB RAM

pcNate-
Yes you can bump to 256MB for "free" but it is my understanding that you can't use the $100 rebate. You'd be better off using the rebate since you can bump yourself to 256MB for $100 but then you get 10% off so it goes down to $90.

Even better would be to use my solution above since Dell probably uses the same generic memory that is sold on PriceWatch (which should be fine for anyone not over-clocking).

i would jump on this if only damn Dell would put a serial port on them...they are only found on higher-end models
becareful guys...if u get this model, console port access to say, a cisco router/switch will be a no-no unless u get a usb
adapter!

slycat-
A USB -> Serial (DB9) adaptor can be had for only $15... probably cheaper if you search harder.

Am I missing something? This hardly seems like a deal breaker to me on a great laptop....

The deal breaker for me is sales tax ... when you factor your total, are you forgetting to add sales tax or is there a way around it? From my understanding, if it's purchased in Dell Business, you must pay sales tax ... unless you are tax exempt.

dell collects sales tax in the small business division so that no, you couldn't commit tax evasion and not pay your sales taxes going through them. unless you can find a tax exempt ID and then defend the purchase if you get audited.

I do understand that! My point it the deal isn't really $979.10 shipped, but $979.10 + tax. I suppose I will need to sleep on it, I really want one of the HP's @ CC, but they are still oos.

What are we looking at for a single 256MB stick to replace the 2x64s in there? They worth anything? I'd like 256 minimum, but think it's cheaper than the $100.
