Title of thread should be edited.

This is regional and requires other service.

Nothing more than a warm deal but thanks anyway.

No lie, it took 40 days to get Ameridreck DSL service installed. If you aren't comfortable installing a NIC, or dinking with the network settings on your PC, do not get service from them, cuz their support is horrible. They've randomly shut off my connection a couple of times requiring a week for them to hook me back up. I hate Ameridreck and would gladly dump my phone and DSL service if there was a viable alternative. I'm currently being shafted for $50/month for DSL, so this deal would make sense if I can cancel the extra services.

When not disconnected by them, the service is up about 95% of the time, however, my speed is only around 500k down.

If you aren't getting the down speed you expect, it's probably b/c you're at the fringe range from a repeater station. It's so many feet from a station before the signal degrads enough where you don't get anything.

This could be the reason you're getting a slower down speed than someone closer to the station. That is one of the reasons they say your speeds may not be the same. As noted above one person is getting a faster than advertised speed. He/she is probably close to the station.

I've have Zero problems with Ameritech DSL. It's been reliable, tech support helpful, and not cost prohibitive.

Can you define "not cost prohibitive"?

i said not "cost prohibitive" b/c you can get varying levels of service....and depending which state your in...you have different numbers of levels.

In IL, I believe there are 3 levels...other states they service have up to 7. By levels I mean..upload/download speeds.

It costs the same as other providers. You can get in on a deal for 2 free months, free install, and free modem. So, YMMV on price.

Hello,

I feel for everyone in regards to your DSL problems.... I actually work for SBC Pacific Bell.....

I used to work as a DSL installation/maintenance tech... but I 'm now current back with the mother company...

The SBC internet has gone to .... I cannot actually type it, for I am at work, but I, or should I say "WE" were as frustrated as all of you. We had an incident where about 10,000 orders were lost in the system ????

Needless to say even with PUC violation paybacks ... service is still not up to par.. or as advertised, but just to let you know that "US", as employees installing and maintaining services out in the field do feel bad when you are out of service. I cannot say for those in the office.

I guess I'm just saying not everyone from SBC is "EVIL" as previously stated.

I'm Ameritech DSL client in Chicago area for about 8 month. Quality of the service is so-so. I remember the mentioned problem with amazon.com (talked with 3 different reps, even with some higher level technician. The funny story is none of them know what is a route and DNS has nothing to do with it.

Another problem was maybe 4 month ago. They have some kind of problems with they auth servers. I was unable to connect to Internet for 6 days. Talked with bunch of CSR and the only thing they suggested... change DNS servers Anyway they CSR don't have even basic networking knowledge. Remember a funny thing. Even I said that I'm using win2k CSR girl was trying to walk me throw they win9x troubleshooting And all the time (1-2 calls a day) they claimed that my l/p wrong.

Anther funny sorry: after about 1 mouth of usage I was called by they CSR and asked if I need help to connect

Bottom line: they CSR are stupid kids without any computer/networking education. (at lest I got this impression after talking with 20+ CSR during my 8 months of service.)

The speed is very interesting thing in my experience. Download speed is ok. but upload speed is ?jumpy?

Bottom line: Most likely I?ll be dropping them as soon as my 1-year pass. Definitely not worth 50$ a month, but for 30 it sounds good.

<< DSL from Ameritech SUCKS!!!! I use to do tech support for them and their network is always down. Especially Chicago, IL. & Cleveland, OH. I do not recommend you sign up because you are going to regret it. Don't fall for SBC scams. Hook line and sinker.

For one thing they built the network too small to support all the people on it so service goes down the crapper. I recommend some other type of broadband. Ameritech's tech support is a third party company name Convergys. They are based in Houston, St. Louis, and Florida. Under paid workers that don't care if you get your service up or not. Once it goes down (which is pretty often) they will tell you that they are working on the problem but it never gets resolved. As around, I gaurantee that what I'm saying is the truth. NO BS!!!!

If you decide to get the service anyways, then make sure you ask for an Ethernet Modem or they will automatically send you a USB modem. Then your service will never be up.
>>

I'm in cleveland, and I can attest to this. It is utter crap, the worst telco, the worst service, downtime, etc.

EVERYONE i know who has/or had ameritech dsl had it go down multiple times for weeks, have had bad speeds down(600kb) and have had only long hold times and bad CSRs on support.

I have adelphia cable, it has gone down twice in nearly a year, both times due to them UPGRADING their network, I get 3MBit down, 128cap for upload. I have never waited on the tech line for more than 20 minutes, at busy times of the day.

I would avoid this deal, get cable for $10 more amonth, or less if you buy your modem

I just ordered it and they did not mention the increase of my phone bill or the local toll not being with them( good for me). I will keep you updated with how it works for me.

BTW they started this $29.95 plan last week so it would suck to be one that signed up at $49.95 (because of the one year contract)

I signed up at $49.95 (because of the one year contract) 3 months ago... with a year contract...

I guess I am SCREWed....

$50.. is a soso deal.. $30 is a warm deal in terms of the dsl service...

<< As long as you don't need tech support or reliability. Ameritech is for you! >>

> Tech support , yea I agree. Reilability, not the case
dido, don't count on tech support, Reilability is ok with 90-95% uptime

> download speed is ~500, upload speed is HORRIBLE !!!!

have anyone speak with the CSR and successfully demand lowering their bill ?

<< Weird splitter thingy? Most likely, your using the 4 wires on that line then. So now, your second line is on the yellow and black pair.

They shouldn't have to put it in a splitter thing (2 line splitter). The tech was just lazy and didn't install two lines or at least seperate it into two jacks for you.
>>

Thanx for the info DUDE. My apartment complex does not allow a second jack to be installed, hence the spliiter-thing box. The jackass DID first install one line in the bedroom and the other in the living room. I could not believe my eyes considering my 4-line phone was sitting there waiting. Anyways, they fixed that via the splitter. I was just curious how the dsl would cooperate with that kind of setup; losing a phone line for a few days will put me out of business that's why I thought I should ask you guys.

Not to crap on your thread but Ameritech dsl sucks. been with them for one month and constantly getting a "server not responding" response when trying to logon. Tired of having to call them again and again and again. But, have a one year contract with them sso i'm stuck with them

What else can I say? Ameritech SUCKS or what? For some of the people that is getting the "E0047P Timeout while trying to connect to server" is because your lines have not been provisioned properly. If you try calling tech support about it then most likely you will get "Sir, they are having problems in your area and it will be resolved in a few hours." I know because I use to tell people that. Don't get me wrong but I do try to fix as many problems as I can.

As for training the technicians, 2 weeks of nonsense. Stuff that has nothing to do with DSL. Recruiting techs can be anyone of the street.

I recommend that no one gets this service and that you should find an alternative broadband ISP, unless you have no choice. If you get screwed on your bill then it'll take months before it gets corrected. I am in Houston and I get awesome speeds with Road Runner cable. (2000+ Kbps down, 400+ Kbps up) $44.95 a month because i don't subscribe to cable tv, but I do get free cable tv anyways. lolz

<< I have Ameritech. I kittied up for the big line 1500 down/ 386 up. It's $60 a month, but you have to do the whole gift card garbage. Good thing I read this post... I had forgotten about that!!! Probably part of the scam. Leave it up to us guys to forget about getting their $$ back and they get to keep it. Anyway, I don't have that much experience with reliability but I found the tech support to be quite good actually. The guys who work the lines were having a bad day or something when they came to hook me up. I went away on a week business trip, came home and DSL was supposed to be active. Not only was DSL not active, but all my phone lines had been disconnected!! Turns out the DSL guy came out, hooked me up, tested the line, and forgot to plug my house back into the line out to the pole. Something in that mysterious gray box.

Anyway, I found that @ midnight and got a call in to repairs at 9am, they were at my house and had it fixed by 11am. Then I talked to tech support for a while because DSL did not work. Turns out it's a new house and I didn't know I had an alarm system! Once I unhooked that - whala. But they spent the better part of an hour on with me, I waited 2 minutes on hold to get to them, and they had scheduled a tech to come to my house that afternoon when it looked like we weren't getting anywhere. In general - I've been impressed with them so far.

I was quite dissappointed in the whole being unplugged thing - but hey ... even the best of us have those days. How many times have you fiddled with your computer, put it all together and then foudn you left the cable disconnected from the hard drive? I've done it a couple times in my life. I'll admit it.

Anyway, back to the deal... I like their service. BUT... does the $45 /include/ your phone service, or you have to pay $45 in phone service to get the cheap DSL? If it's the latter, I'd just go for the $60 a month 1.5/386 line. It's very sweet. Anyway, that's my advice.

Maybe if you're calling to ask tech support about the status of their backbones, ping times, etc. they'll be clueless. But if you're just looking for setup support (which, apparently based on the posts for reliability is all you'll likely need from them.) they've got it down. You really shouldn't have any problems anyway.

Tech support , yea I agree. Reilability, not the case. I`ve had Ameritech in Ohio for 18 months , I`ve been down once since I`ve signed on. Getting 1300k down, 256k up, 24 hours a day.

Hey Mr. Phelps, Thanks for the post.
I live in Royal Oak and I am considering trying this deal. I am so sick and tired of Comcast that I doubt Ameritech could be worse......

Good luck all

Read my page ( http://home.insight.rr.com/americrap/ ) BEFORE going ameritech.
I had it 14 months

summary :

In 14 months it did NOT work right 32+ days , NOT connecting at all 20+ days.

A broken connection takes 9 or 10 days to fix. No credit for down time.

I got NO Response from sending a complaint to :

Compliments/complaints : feedback@ameritech.net + PLUS you get to be on the phone for HOURS and HOURS

P.S. I have RoadRunner now , and happy.

I thank everyone for their honest opinions. 4-22-02 I should have mine up and running so if I don't post it will be because everyone that had Ameritech DSL were right. For me I hope its not the case.

THANKS A LOT FOR THE FEED BACK ON MY " HOT DEAL "

ahh...
just talk to the cancellation department/retentation department

got a lot of "server not responding msg" and mysterious drop off recently esp @ nite...

talked to the supervisor

they offered me a $199 giftcard but I need to sign another 12 months contract .... with the OLD rate $49.99 instead of the new rate $29.99
WTF....

and if I cancel, I will be penalize for $200 early contract retraction fee. (for their POS 128/768 service)

I didn't take the bait...
SO I am stick to $50 for the rest of the year contract.. suck...

advice: sign up for $30 if u are NEW customer (decent deal if u can stand non-existant technical support and POS service)
OLD customer with contract.. CALL and see what they can do with their POS service..
