I am having a relative call them tomorrow and may order the Ferrari 3400. If people have an issue doing a transaction over the Internet then you can call them directly. Might also want to call Acer to check up on them. Lastly, aren't credit card purchases insured to a varying degree against fraud?

===========

Update: The Ferrari is no longer in stock .

I can confirm that this is a SCAM!

I work for the real Notebook Express Ltd here in the UK. We do not stock this item. The website notebookexpress-ltd.com is a clone of our own website. Notebook Express Ltd

This information has been passed on to the Police and anyone who has purchased from the scam site is advised to contact us so we can refer you on to the fraud squad.

We want to state once more that notebookexpress-ltd.com is NOTHING to do with Notebook Express Ltd and is a fraudulant site.

If you have any questions please contact me.

I'm confused. So if the real store in the UK doesn't carry it? Cardio, How did friend pick one up? And did you get it?

My relative had made repeated attempts over the past several days to contact them via telephone, fax and e-mail without any response in an attempt to find out when they were going to restock the item. The telephone line seemed to have been always busy. I am wondering if Cardio's statements were genuine.

If they got from the ltd site, they might want to put a hold or something on their credit card. That site isn't even there anymore, and while notbook express hasn't finished their page, they are apparently creating some kind of warning or something: http://www.notebookexpress.com/

I hardly think it is fair that you should be accusing each and every person who has posted here as such.

still doesn't explain how cardio got one...and he's been an AT'er for 2 years now, so i doubt he's lying to us.

Coming from the UK and know what a rip of the prices are for cunsumer electronics I'd say even at the full price of GBP930 it would still be a bargain!

A bottom of the range Dell laptop in the UK is around GBP400....

$77 to ship with Fedex to the USA is pretty cheap - I've priced sending laptops from the USA to other countries and the cheapest I noted was over $100 with USPS.

Most of the big players Fedex/UPS etc were touching $200 to ship - surface was cheaper but that would take around a month...

Well, my friend picked the laptop up from the store in north London, paid the $1180 plus about $78 VAT, shipped it FexEx thru the company he works for at a discounted price of about $50. The VAT is supposed to be refundable as it was exported from UK, but we're not really counting on it. So total of $1308. Newegg has it for $1879. I could not find out if any customs duty will apply. Looking at the customs website it seems as if you have to subscribe for about $20 to access the duty database of fees!!! Might be between 0 and 2.6%. I should have it about Wednesday. It's been a lot of trouble and I'm not sure it's worth it. The place is real, located in an office building on the first floor. Doesn't look much like a retail location, he said, but they do have a lot of stock on hand. No idea if warranty is valid in US. Edd did not open the box before shipping it so I hope it's not just a slab of Stonehenge, actually that might be worth more.

One aspect of the sale price + tax issue that raised an eyebrow for me was the estimated tax (VAT) paid on the laptop.

Well, my friend picked the laptop up from the store in north London, paid the $1180 plus about $78 VAT

In the UK VAT is charged at a fixed rate of 17.5% therefore $1180 x 1.175 = $1386.50 including VAT.

So that is $1386.50 - $1180 = $206.70 in refundable VAT

Now $78/$1180 = 6.61% which is more like a US state tax charge.

Now either the "friend" was charged a lower rate of VAT in error or perhaps somebody simply "spinning a tale" using knowledge of US State tax %ages and not realising the actual rate of VAT?

Put this together with the new posts suggesting that this is a rip off site of a legitimate UK based site and the fact that everything else seems to go against the site (being genuine) I would assume the incorrect VAT charge is also unlikely

Perhaps the shop did charge your friend a US state tax rate for the VAT and all of the other negative evidence is just coincidence.....and you just got lucky?

I find it hard to believe as well that Cardio's outright lying to us... I hope not anyway. And his comment about the friend not opening the box, and hoping it's not a piece of stonehenge, leads me to think he's legit. If he was trying to build confidence, why's he put that in there... But perhaps his account here was hacked? Just wildly speculating here... If someone knows him/her personally or done a trade with them in the past, perhaps they can get in touch with them outside of AT and see if there's something fishy going on.

Theres a whole bunch of these laptops for around $1200 on ebay. Seems they might be grey imports, but im think 99% of them are scams as the sellers have highish feedback but its always for low low price items or they have been the buyer. One guy i saw had 200+ feedback... but it was all socks! Then you look at his listings and he has a bunch of high end laptops for sale at too good to be true prices.

Tany, you probably lost your money. Contact the FBI here and make a call to the UK and try the police there, or call the bank where the money was transfered. Opening up a checking account is actually quite hard in the UK, especially now after 9/11 so the owner of that account should be traceable. I hope you have copies of what you were supposed to get and so on as proof it was for the laptop.

I think Cardio is full of BS. If it wasnt a scam, the company had no choice to not charge 17.5% VAT, and if it was a scam they would have charged it and kept the money anyways

I've worried about this. Always check the feedback. There's a lot of feedback buying going on. Desktop wallpapers for $0.01, recipes for a couple of cents, etc. I was offering vonage refers there, and before raising my price, I kept getting people bidding that had already been referred (vonage won't take an email address again). One guy had bought 3 vonage refers, plus a couple of Packet8. 60+ positive feedback in under 1 month. Checked them out, the most expensive item was $0.10! Funny thing was he had left me positive feedback when I had sent him email saying I couldn't refer him because he had been referred already... I hate cheating scumbags.

Joerg and Cardio - Where art thou?

Tany - 22 days ago? Where and how did you find this website? You don't have a credit card?

Trust no one if they have less than 1,000 posts. If you have that many the Forums are a part of your life. Sick as that might seem. I'm almost half way there and I am starting to get the symptoms. Let's not be naive here. I am sure that there are quite a few scammers on this board. Just go to the FS/Trade board - there are quite a few listed.

I found this website by searching on Internet by Google. I have a credit card but I prefered to pay by money order, sothat I can know where my money goes. I am now working with Metroplitan police:
Detective Constable
C.M.U.
Economic and Specialist Crime Unit
Wellington House
67-73 Buckingham Gate
London
SW1E 6BE
Maybe I can find what lost. Thank you for concerning.

I'll never understand the sense of entitlement some people feel towards others possesions and money

AHH....sucks for them, but a sucker is born every minute. If you can't smell scam on this one, you're blind. Only look for deals from legitimate vendors. If you go to the small websites that haven't been established for very long, you're playing with fire... I can't believe people keep falling for it over and over again...until they wise up, these scams will continue.
