They subbed the WD 120GB USB 2.0 drive for the 80GB, and they subbed the MadDog 16xDVDRW (rebadged NEC) for the Aopen drive

P.S.: I had to badger them into it. They said at first that there was no subs on the clearance stuff, but I played the "district manager card": "Say, is So-n-so still the district manager for this area?" I know the district manager thanks to a dispute I had with Office Maxes price match policy a few years back. They then made a few 'calls' and had the items brought to the register for me.

Dammit. No sub for the 80GB for me. However, they did have the 16X drive. I think I got the last one in South Bend, IN.

I tried again at a different OfficeMax, and the manager played harder ball than I did. He didn't even blink when I 'played the district manager card.' I didn't get squat. I'm going back to the first one tomorrow, and hopefully score another pair.

For $55 after MIR you can get the WD 80GB($30 MIR & $25 MIR) and a $25 (no rebates) Adaptec USB 2.0 enclosure. Works for me!

Not sure if the WD drive is or you can do to but the Iomega drive you can use a IEEE wire on it, also they are supposed to be packed with WD drives in them, so far no problems with it and transfered files pretty smoothly, I'm going to get a firewire cord for it to hopefully make it a little quicker.

That's a good backup suggesting, but I would much rather have the 120GB WesternDigital drive they are authorized by the corp office to substitute. The only ones left in West Houston are at the Katy store, and the manager there is a harda$$ and doesn't want to honor the substitution. Unfortunately, he isn't required to, it's left up to his discretion.

At least I got one before the deal fell apart

Did anybody else get the 120GB sub, and if you did, is it the newer silver case, or the old version?

I live in Seattle, but every OfficeMax was OOS. I checked the Sacramento stores, and they had a bunch. Anyway, my mother (a cute elderly lady) said that she would pick one up and ship it. I called the store telling them to hold one for me, and that my mother would come in and pick it up. I'm guessing my mom walked in the store looking a bit confused, but the sales lady noticed here and helped her out. They were OOS on the clearance model, but gave my mom the newer 80gb drive (with on/off switch) for the same price anyway.
That's the way I got my replacement. YMMV

I managed to get this deal by mistake at officemax earlier. I work there myself however last weekend i was off for a vacation (for my vacation i ended up more sick then i could dream lasted until like tuesday >_< ), and when i went in earlier another associate was telling me about the drive. It just so happened the Sub list did indid show THREE seperate SKUs for possible subs all down to the $49.00 clearance. I'm just assuming it was the 80Gb new model first, 120gb older, then 120gb newer. I ended up with the last newer gray 120gb w/ 3 buttons (power + 2 diff backup options) for $49.00.

That's the one I got. It was really nice. My only issue with it is that it is the 2mb not 8mb cache model.

I was hoping it would match the drive I already have so I could do a RAID0 array. It's still great for a backup drive.
