The substitute is the WD 120gb EXT 1200BBRNN and Iomega 80gb EXT

the extend warranty is 14.95 for 3yrs from WD

or OM has $5.99 replacement plan for an additional yr.

YES THERE ARE TWO SUBS FOR THIS DRIVE

There's a substitute?!?!?!
None of the OM stores that I went to tonight mentioned that, only just "sold out". Now I'm annoyed.

In fact, in a fit of "buyer's desperation", at the last store that I went to in an attempt to PM with the OM flyer, I bought a slightly-distressed but NIB TDK 440N DVD burner for $40.

(Mostly because it was in black, and I knew that it was a decent NEC drive, athough I clearly wasn't in my right mind, because for $15 more shipped, I could have ordered a black NEC 16X burner instead. Doh! OM had some of those 16X MicroAdvantage/AOpen DVD burners for $40 OTD too, which isn't a bad deal, although I've only heard so-so reviews about those drives.)

Btw, CC has the newer model 80GB WD with the "one touch backup" feature, for $70 AR. Not bad either, but the OTD price was something like $130.

WTF....
Where are you getting this information? The manual that came with mine states (and I quote) "WD warrants that the Product, in the course of its normal use, will be free from defects in material and workmanship for a period of one (1) year and
will conform to WD?s specification therefor. This limited warranty period shall commence on the purchase date appearing on your purchase receipt.
" Here is a link to a PDF of the manual I'm refering to. Also, I bought mine with a credit card the extends the warranty by one year past the manufacturers warranty, so I should be set.

That is correct info on the substitutes. Just as a FYI, the Iomega 80GB has a $20 manufacturer rebate. My OM subbed this for me and the rebate printed out. Rebate requests must be postmarked by 05/02/05.

I grabbed one today. Pretty nice if you work on (and back-up) pc's for people.

I picked up a couple of these because I needed an external drive to move files around at home and provide capacity to offload my laptop at work. After getting the drives home and examining one, the enclosure was a little less than expected but considering $49+tax with the drive and no rebate hassles, I considered it a very good deal.

Now here's the question I am getting around to...how many people would buy an 80GB drive any more? And, what is the value of an 80GB drive? I mean ... who wants one?

What is prompting the question is that while at CompUSA yesterday, they were selling Adaptec gear at 50% off. There was a very nice aluminum external drive enclosure with power switch and stand reduced from $50 to $25 with no rebate. Definitely a nicer enclosure than the WD which is plastic. The only thing missing was a fan (the WD didn't have one either). According to the hype on the Adaptec box, the aluminum case was sufficient to radiate any heat from a drive (?).

With 120GB easily had for $60 or less, I am thinking the bare enclosure is a better route. After all, you have to to consider the value of the real estate involved (drive enclosure, rack, etc,).

Opinions?

I called all 3 stores in my area and all were sold out, but I was able to get one to give me a substitute (120gb model) for the same price. Unfortunately they only had one left, but one is better than none i guess.

Thanks Garlic, for the OP. And, thanks oslama, for mentioning that there were no less than TWO attractive substitutes, and, also, thanks HESDog for mentioning the $20 rebate on the Iomega -- snagged me one for $31.XX inc. tax AR!

Stopped by one of the OM's I knew were out of the original, and told them about the two authorized substitutes. They were reluctant the whole way through. I brought them the tags for BOTH of the subs. They eventually offered me the Iomega. I asked about the WD, and one of the many managers and assistant managers who flubbed their way through this turgid process lied that it was a different model DESPITE the model #'s matching perfectly.

OK, they don't know I'll gladly the take the merely 80 gb IO with the $20 rebate. So the transaction goes down and the bitch register flunkey tries to palm the rebate instead of letting me have it. Pointless argument and posturing ensues. Gesticulation and inflammed oratory create a near field disturbance. Assistant managers, and assistants to the assistant managers are summoned, and finally the Big Kahuna MANAGER his own damn self arrives in his regal OM sedan chair, fanned by cowering attendants.

The entire managerial hierarchy of the store were stonewalling, cavilling, shucking and jiving . . . and employing the crassest forms of oratorical misdirection, but I was resolute and having none of it. I took down names and positions and the store number and invoked the word "corporate" with majestic authority limned by just the hint of legal menace.

The MANAGER, a man whose position is so full of gravitas and import that it can only be typed in all caps, desperately scoured the rebate for one final out, but there was none, and, with eyes downcast and without further comment, he handed it over.

Raj the register mokey looked on with awe.

"Well done", I crowed, and sashayed out to the sunlit parking lot.

All was right with the world.

Bought one of these the other day on the Internet for delivery. Received the "your product is on back order" email. Called them today to check status and was told my order was cancelled - per the rep, there is no back order as this was an instore only deal. No substitutes available or offered. Rep noted the system (her words, not mine) "crashed" the other day, and orders were being entered by hand. Not sure if this was mentioned to try and appease me in some way. She even thanked me for cancelling, after she told me the order was cancelled.

It never fails to amaze me how many of the big retailers just can't get it together.

Ah, to NewEgg or ZipZoomFly - much better.

That's bull. The discounted offer was showing up on the web site (and not as an "in-store only special"), two days before the B&M sale flyer showed it at that price, AFAIK. Well, don't feel too bad, I didn't get one either. :|

There two versions of the 80gb and 120gb external drives. The older drives are in blue and yellow packaging and lack any power and/or backup buttons/swtich. On the 120gb i have, I had issues with unplugging the usb while drive was inuse/mounted. Its an hassle to go to device manager and STOPing usb devices inorder to park/disconnect the drive.

New versions have the power and backup button/switch and come in a white and blue box. These are NOT the subs.
