Well, not really. We know that IQ is positively correlated to socio-economic status and education, and you can look at my sig for a negative correlation of smoking and socio-economic status and education.

I didn't say the difference is huge. It may be close to negligible, but I've no doubt that there is a statistical difference in IQ between smokers and non-smokers and it makes perfect intuitive sense--ignoring all anecodtal experience (as well as my sig)--that the smokers would be the dumb ones!

Not understanding statistics properly is no excuse to undermine their validity and the fact that countless decisions are made based upon them. You use them yourself all the time, even if you aren't aware of it.

And no, I don't have causal proof, but it doesn't mean there isn't that trend. Can you show statistics that if a person jumps off the roof of a 100 story apartment building they are more likely to die than jumping off the top of my car? No, but it doesn't mean the trennd wouldn't support it. Statistics are a representation of reality; they don't create it.

I know statistics have their place, but nobody's going to change anything based on a smoking statistic. The causal link between lung cancer and smoking took decades to find. I'd think knowing that there's a good chance that smoking will lead to your death would be a more significant impetus for kicking the habit than some stat that says smokers are slightly more dumb overall, wouldn't you? Funny thing, though. People still smoke.

Both of my grandfathers smoked. Both were highly intelligent in their own ways. Both died of lung cancer.

My point wasn't to bash your statistic. My point was that it was irrelevant. If you don't like how smokey a convenience store is, go to the one next door that doesn't allow smoking... which is exactly the course of action the OP is taking. When my dad got fed up with how much smoke there was in Denny's, what did he do? He walked out and has never gone to another Denny's again. He didn't lobby for social reform. He didn't try to ban smoking in all public places. He didn't throw a big fit.

Money talks. The consumers should drive business decisions, not the government. A lot of that probably belongs in that other smoking thread. What's up with all these smoking threads anyway?

smoking can be a very enjoyable thing. not everyone smoke like chimneys. I bet there are many people out there who smokes 1-2 ciggs a day or smokes pipe tobacco and just enjoys life like that.

many people can't find better jobs because of their economic backgrounds and it is hard for them to move up the ladder or even it can be someone's second job to make some extra money.

i do agree with you guys that parents/people who smoke around childern/others who do not smoke and force them to breathe in the nasty smoke should be punished.

from my experiences - people who work lower end jobs usually smoke more compared to people with $$$ jobs because it gets them through the day. many people say well, why don't they just go and get better jobs? it's not that simple. starting at an early age if your parents work crappy jobs and dont have time to care for you or watch out for you, theres a high chance that you will probably not succeed in school and end up working low end jobs and smoking ciggarettes to get you thru the day. (just a theory)
