Smoking, melting case speaker wire?!

I've just had something very wierd and disturbing happen to my system. I had just finished unhooking some fans from my motherboard (Iwill KK266), and then turned on my system. To my horror smoke started pouring out of my case and the power switch would not shut the system off, so I unplugged the powersupply. I looked in my case and found that the speaker wire which goes from the motherboard to the case speaker was very hot, and clearly had been melting and causing the smoke. I looked over the motherboard to make sure no wires were touching it and plugged back in all the fans. Once again I powered up the system and smoke came pouring from the speaker wire cable yet again, however this time the power switch was able to shut the system off. Before this incident my system has been working fine, although the case speaker has never worked. Currently I have the speaker wire unplugged any everything else on the system seems to be working fine, anyone have any idea what could possibly be causing this?

The Iwill strikes again.

Possibly the speaker wires became unsheathed and crossed when you where working on the fans? Hopefully this isn't what happens when the speaker connection is orientated incorrectly.

"The Iwill strikes again. "

Wow...that's real helpful and constructive...

I am not positive, but I think it might be your speaker has gone bad. It could also be the speaker header pins, but more than likely it is the speaker. I am not sure where a replacement could be had...maybe Radio Shack? See if a new speaker fixes your problem or if it still smokes it may be the header.. I don't use a speaker on my KK266-R so I can't test my headers...

Heh, sorry, I'm just amused at the inordinate number of times I've seen an Iwill involved in a fire. I'm probably just jealous that I havent' been able to trade my kt7a for one.

JonnyBaby, don't know you, not sure I want to, but that comment really bugs me. Are Iwills perfect? Nope. Is your kt7a? Nope. Did either of them make Comp10 short out his speaker wire? Nope.

What caused it wasn't the motherboard. You said you were in there pawing around right beforehand, give you good odds that you bumped up against the speaker or against something else which did...long and short of it being you got a cheap ass speaker in your case (nothing personal, happens to the best of us) and one of the leads on it grounded to the speaker frame. Created a short, got hot, melted the wire, and aside from not having a PC speaker, hurt nothing more than your nose.

I did the same thing with an old 486, tore the speaker apart afterwards and saw whoever slapped it together had the wires bridged so it smoked the first time I turned on the machine. Wasn't happy, but it didn't hurt the MB Fixed the problem, put in new wires (melted both completely, had the case on and didn't see the smoke right away) and away it went, speaker even still worked. Heck, still does.

So Comp10, bad deal, nothing you did, most likely no harm done. Jonnybaby, nothing Iwill did either. May you and your kt7a be very happy together.
