Not really a hot deal, but I figured since so many people buy HD's through here, that it would be worth it to enough people to post. Mods, feel free to lock or move this thread if you feel it's out of line. Also feel free to sticky it if you feel its really informative.

For Seagate and other drive markers, the exception to the increased warranty status will be external drives, which are subject to the jars and jolts that drives protected by a PC chassis are not. Those drives will still have a warranty period of one year.

That is pretty decent... especially since most drive makers are moving from 3 years down to 1. Having 4 extra years on your warranty, especially if you can get the drive at the same price as a different manufacturer is sweet.

Even though there are limited places to buy them, my next drives will be Seagates. No factor builds my confidence in a product more than the manufacturer having some themselves.

It's good to see somebody go against the current trend of lowering warrantees.
Their drives may not be the fastest, but they are quiet and seemingly reliable.

great job, i was hesitant to buy seagates beacuse of their 1 yr warranties and went with a hitachi drive, since it was 3 yr, but now i am kinda regretting it. my next drive will be a seagate. 5 year warranty isnt something u overlook.

I just bought a seagate 2 days ago from Frys. I wonder if I am covered by the new warranty. How can I tell if it was shipped to frys after June 1?

They've got good warranty support. I just bought a 200GB UltraATA (from an AT post!) and it died within a month. I asked the warranty people to switch it to a SATA. They sent me a 160GB SATA instead, i lost 40GB, but i got a SATA out of the deal for $100.
