Thanks! Seagates have always been my favorite anyway. Hopefully this doesn't raise their prices though :-(

Sweet, the 80GB drive that I bought a week or so is covered until June 2009! I originally bought it because IMO it would be the most reliable since almost all new drives only come with a 1 year warranty. Looks like I chose wisely.

Sorry to post it here but does anybody know why I can't post new topics?

It seems that whenever I click the new topic button, nothing happens.

do I have to be a premium member to post new topics or something.

The other companies will probably follow the example of Seagate, maybe going with the old 3 year warranty instead of the puny 1 year.

If you are looking to upgrade your TIVO, Seagate is probably a good choice because TIVO seems to wear the drives faster than computers. Just don't tell Seagate the drive was in a TIVO when you need warranty work.

AWESOME.

Not only does seagate make quiet and reliable drives. They also have a great no hastle RMA policy (unless it's been changed in the last year or two)

kewl, i'll pay a little more for a decent warrantee. losing data to stupid drive failures is so annoying. knowing a company has atleast a little faith in their product is nice, unlike those cr@p 1yr warrantees we're seeing these days. heck i just had one maxtor rma die after 1 yr. and that was the rma! now i gotta rma the rma! in a fan cooled bay no less

Seagates were always good for reliability and quiet operation, and now that reliability is guaranteed for 5 years

I've switched about a year ago to nothing but seagate drives for customers because of how quiet they are and very reliable. This new 5yr. warranty will only further my belief that seagate is still the best
company out there!

Now if only they make a SATA 10,000rpm drive soon!!

Nice to see someone stepping up to the plate and offering a longer warranty, kudos to Seagate! FYI, a few of you have mentioned that the other manufacturers have dropped their warranties all down to 1 year. NOT TRUE. Western Digital OEM 8MB drives are 3 year.

This applies to OEM drives as well as retail, correct? Also, do you think it is safe to expect a 5yr warranty if I bought a OEM drive from Newegg now that says it has a 1yr warranty?

my question is, will seagate use technicalities in their warranty policy to void possible warranty issues?
i heard that for the hitachi warranty, if you keep your computer on 24/7 or like consecutive, it does not qualify for warranty because of the policy..

HMMMMMMMMMMM..........

HMMMMMMMMMMM..........

They changed their "recommended power-on hours" spec after the 75GXP debacle, but I heard from several people doing RMAs of their drives around that time that they didn't deny the RMA based on logged POH of the drive, so I think that's just a spec, not a component of the warranty itself.

I've always run my drives 24x7. Given proper cooling, it should actually be slightly healthier for them than starting and stopping them all the time, at least IMO. My 75GXP lasted 24x7 for 2.5 years before I sold it off. Some people have been running them 24x7 for longer.

I really don't think that it's anything to worry about myself.

is there any place we can send a letter or e-mail/comment feedback to seagate thanking them for this move? That way seagate will get a positive response from the community and they will continue to offer their warranty. You scratch my back, I scratch yours.

Sounds good to me. I couldn't figure out which section to place it under, but they have an email thingy on their web site.

Looks like Newegg has now changed the specs of their Seagate drives to reflect the 5 year warranty.

Now to decide what drive to get... Any comments on the 200GB SATA 7200.7?

Will I need some sort of power adaptor for it if my PSU does not have SATA plugs? My Raptors have both, so I have never had to worry about it.
