This seems to be a common problem. I've been researching these enclosures but I haven't pulled the trigger because the manufacturer's site and the retailer's sites are so often in conflict. I just can't be sure of what I'd be getting.

Go by the model #'s from the manufacturer's spec sheet.
That model is USB only.
Look for the COMBO model number if you want USB & Firewire.

Oppie 1's deal looks to be pretty HOT!!!
It's both USB AND Firewire for $32.

There's always a camp that swears by Bytecc and a camp that swears by Plumax.
I don't know anything about the chipset in that Plumax.
If anyone has any info or experience, I'd appreciate it.

I received this enclosure a while ago, works perfectly fine on both USB 2.0 and 1.1. Transfers are fast on 2.0, so if your motherboard supports it then this deal is pretty nice. Still going on too

I ordered one of these & received it friday. Put a hdd in it & its working fine, only have usb 1.1 on a laptop for now though

Yes it has an internal power supply, no power brick just a 3 pin power cord like an atx power supply uses.

Yes, i.e.e you just have a power cord coming out of it and plug it directly into 110V. No "brick" and of course not powered through the USB cable (not enough juice).

This review is a joke. They compare the internal drive running at 7200rpm to this external enclosure containing a 5400rpm drive. This review does not provide valid statistics to aid the buyer. It does look very cool, fersure. If anyone ever discovers a reliable comparison of Firewire and/or USB 2 enclosures, please post it to this discussion. I've never seen such a thing done on the net and would be interested to know if the chipsets in these enclosures should factor into purchase decisions.

i recently got a oxford 922 usb2.0/firewire800 enclosure made by orange micro off ebay for 33. running good so far, too bad i don't have firewire800 to try.
