hi there. sorry for english(i am greek)
i am currently running need for speed most wanted at 1024*768, fsaa and texture filtering not in a highest mode and vsync deactivated.
my graphics card is msi 7800gtx 256 mb and the cpu is intel pentium 830, mobo asus p5wd3 premium. the problem is that the game isn't 100%smooth. i tried overclocking the card with the msi software but nothing happened. i also tried the new nvidia drivers but the situation got worst.so the question is...
is that all this graphics card can give??if the answear is yes then i am really dissapointed because i paid 340 pounds to get it 4 months ago.do i have to go sli to enjoy gaming??damn...life sucks!!

I don't know about NFS games, but I'm playing Quake 4 at 1280x1024 with the drivers in HQ mode and the ingame settings cranked way up and I'm getting awesome framerates. Same in GUN, HL2, UT2K4, and Painkiller.

I'm not sure what could be limiting your performance. I wonder if you need to patch the game?

Edit to add that my video card is a 7900GT. We have similar performing cards.

Hmmm, it seems like you're saying your game studders every now and then. I have exactly the same problem as you; it'll run smooth and all of the sudden, the framerate will chug and go up again. This is most noticible when I have my videocard on stock speeds. The studdering is not as bad for me when I OC my videocard. It seems like this is a problem associated only with Most Wanted though.

See for yourself.

My 2.4 A64 vs a PD830

At 1280 X 1024 gaming? I doubt the 830 paired with a 7800GTX is going to choke at this resolution. Something else is going on. Observe that the link you provide shows over 100fps for the 830. The only thing I can think of is throttling because of heat.

Edit: You think life sucks because of this? Imagine turning on your computer one day and having the 4 red LED's of death light up on your DFI NF4 run gaming machine  . Tis my situation right now.

You have an excellent motherboard that will let you overclock the cpu with ease. If increasing the cpu doesn't solve the issue, at least we can know to look elsewhere. Check your cpu temperatures under load and make sure they dont exceed 70*C. You can download Motherboard Monitor version 5.3.7.0 i believe or something along these lines to check for max cpu load.

You could try using older drivers, sometimes the newest drivers arent always the best (longshot tho)
and make sure you have no crazy spyware or anything like that. Assuming the hardware is working properly, it shouldnt
be a problem at all. That setup will run anything out smoothly at those settings. Do you have any fps numbers? Does
everytthing else run ok?

Bullshit. I have a 256MB 7800 GTX running with a Pentium 630, and I get great performance. You AMD fanboys are a strange breed.

Are you gettting performance issues with just this one game, or for all games?

Did you install all the drivers for your motherboard before installing the video card drivers?

If this is a second card for this system, did you use driver cleaner to thoroughly clean out the old drivers?

Do you have the 2 memory modules in the correct slots to run dual channel? Not running in dual channel mode will cripple the Pentium's capabilities.

Sounds like a poorly coded game.

I didnt read this whole thread, but if the game is stuttering, it is most likely not an issue with the GTX.

In my experience, stuttering is caused by a need for more RAM. It usually occurs when the hard drive is being thrashed because the game is trying to access the pagefile ... a la BF2 w/ 1GB RAM

I agree. Check your pagefile settings, increase them if your max is less than 1x your physical RAM. For gaming I use 2x my 1gb ram (2048mb).

Also look at your sound settings. Try turning those down, EAX off, etc.

Typical fanboy.

For one thing, the 830 is very close performance wise to the X2 3800+. So you are suggesting that the cpu that 99% of the forums members recommend to new pc builds is too slow for a game I could run at maximum settings on a 9800 Pro with an Athlon 64 2800+?

Why not provide some real help to the OP rather than being a useless waste of space?

For the OP, run 3DMark05 so that we can see if your gpu is scoring where it should be.

THANK ALL OF U VERY MUCH FOR YOUR RESPONSES. i really appreciate that.
in fact i also had problems with thief deadly shadows.prior to that i played prince of persia warrior within and fear(all of them in 1024*765 high quality) and none of them was completely smooth. i definitely don't believe that is a cpu issue. ok... i admit that amd are better but this is not the source of the problem. i have overclocked my cpu at 3.36ghz(fsb 240 and cpu is locked at 14x), memory is running at 640 mhz with dram settings at 3-2-3-8. this is the first video card that i put in my system so,there are no drivers of onother card installed. still, there are no temperature issues. cpu temperature never climbs above 66C full load. i would like to add the fact that i tried playing the game (nfsmw)in 800*600 but there were STILL probs for f... shake!!the only thing that i can think of is that i have my windows installed for about 3-4 months now. do you think that a fresh installation will help?i have read in several posts that 7800gtx is a very good card but i unfortunately haven't seen anything yet!

you might be a little cpu limited, but trust me, it's not the reason why you don't have smooth game play (it's nonsense to say it is)

i assume you have the texture setting on high on all games
which should be the root of the problem

you should either get another gig of ram of turn the texture setting down to medium
it happened to me when i had one gig of ram and my 7800 gtx card
