Snagging expired domains

I am looking for some advice on how to snag an expired domain. It is showing that the domain expired about 4 days ago. I would like to get this domain the second it becomes available (gets dropped) but wasn't sure how long that takes or if using a service like GoDaddy to try to get it when it becomes available for a fee.

Looking for the best route of getting this domain before someone else does.

Backorder the domain name through all unique back ordering services. Unique in that they back ordering service supports different registries.

snapnames (network solutions)
enom (club drop)
godaddy (WWD reseller) --> tdnam
pool
dotster (namewinner)

Any one better than the other? I don't want to register a domain with another registrar like enom or network solutions because all of my domains is with Godaddy.

Dont bother with godaddy... dropped domains typically go to auction, so it will be 3-4 months AFTER the expiration date where you can register it assuming it isnt sold at auction. If its a good domain, unlike you'll get it for the $9 registration price.

HyTekJosh and yobarman - I appreciate the replies. However, I am still a little bit confused on what steps I should take next. HyTekJosh you made mention to backorder the domain on 5 different sites? People have to backorder a domain on all these 5 sites for the highest likelyhood of getting it or will it still probably go to auction. And also, how will I know if a domain goes to auction if I look it up with Godaddy showing that it is still registered (but past expired date).

That makes it sound like it's a desireable domain name. If you want it, you better be willing to pay for it. It's going to cost you (probably) more than you expect. There are several services that will all try to "grab" it the instant it's free. You can't compete with your measly resources. You won't out-grab the companies that specialize in this. And, among those companies who are trying to grab it for their clients, THEY are competing against one another. Then, within those companies, if there's more than one person, there's still a sort of auction system.

Now, if it's a domain that no one probably wants, then you can get it much cheaper. But, as I'm pointing out, if you're worried about "before someone else does," then it implies, at least to me, that there's probably going to be several other people who want that name.

Very interesting article.

The domain was originally registered with GoDaddy, so if I read correctly, using the service by GoDaddy to register names when they drop is the best bet since GoDaddy has the first grab at it? Or does Pool still have power over GoDaddy?

Since the domain was originally registered with GoDaddy, do you use the GoDaddy "Domain Alert Pro" to try to backorder the domain?

I'm a little bit confused because some people say that using the "Domain Alert Pro" works if you can use it on the domain, but if GoDaddy already has someone else that is using that service on that same domain then they won't let you backorder the domain. Can anyone confirm this? For what I know, you can't try to backorder the domain until you purchase the service from GoDaddy and then only after then will you know if someone else currently has it on backorder?

You only pay if the domain was successfully snagged, right?

My advice is to:
1) Sign up for GoDaddy's back ordering service since they'll probably get first dibs.
2) SnapNames.com

I've used that combination a few times and it hasn't failed me, yet. The only times it failed me was when someone outbid me on SnapNames.com

Created an account at snapnames.com but the domain that has past the expiration isn't listed on snapnames.com. I can't find an auto backorder service on snapnames.
