120 GB (100 + 20 deal) $89.99

Can any confirm if $89.99 is out the door price or AR? If it's $89 with no rebate, I'll buy it now for $149 and get 110% difference which amount to $66.00 back.

According to some the model number on the HD is 6Y120P0 which corresponds to a 8mb cache. 6Y120L0 is the 2MB cache. But YMMV.

that would be sweet if it was out the door. I bought this drive last week. So i could get the 110% price match, plus i got the $50 mail in rebates comming to me. They print out seperate rebate recipts so the recipet i have says nothing about it having a rebate and says i paid 149.99 for it.

That would technically bring the total back to me 66 + 50 = 116.00 .....

I got this drive at Best Buy three weeks ago and it was the 8MB version. On the label on the outside of the box it was marked as 2MB cache, but there is a vertical code on the right side of label that gives it away. If the code starts with an "L" then it is the 2MB version, if it starts with a "P" then it is the 8MB version. The model number on the drive itself when I opened the box was 6Y120P0.

Good luck to all. At this price, I may pick up another one!

Hi buddy! You seem to be exactly in the same situation as me! According to the general feedback, a lot of drives seem to be failing these days. A 3 year warranty for WD compared to 1 yr. for Maxtor has tilted the scale in favour of WD. Also, WD are the pioneers in 8MB cache. Besides this, since you (and me) are trying to build a new computer, an 8MB drive can give us the bragging rights and an opportunity to see the speed of our computer!

So, do we get a confirmation for $89 Maxtor out the door? Or is it AR?

A 3 year warranty for WD compared to 1 yr. for Maxtor has tilted the scale in favour of WD.

I've had a much better luck with Maxtors. I will not touch another WD unless it is almost a give-away. The 1-year warranty on Maxtor vs. the 3-year on WD is like 3-year Honda warranty vs. 10-year Hyunday: I'll take a Honda anytime.

I've had good luck with Maxtors as well, but if all things were equal, I'd take the WD for the warranty. I've had bad luck with WD and their rebates tho and no prob with Maxtor and their rebate. YMMV of course.

On another note, it's Hyundai. And also (I assume you are talking B2B warranty) the warranty differential is 3/36 for Honda and 5/60 for Hyundai. That 10 year figure you see mentioned is the powertrain warranty. Having said that, I think Hyundai is where the Japanese automakers were in the 80s and they are slowly creeping up in market share. I know I see a lot more Hyundais now than I ever did (tho perhaps the economy has something to do w/that too).

I was thinking about buying the wd hd, but since i saw that some were getting the 8mb version from best buy, i'm going to buy the one at circuit city and then on sunday morning i will go to best buy and try to get the hd with the 'p' code on the side to get a 8mb version. If i'm able to get the 8mb version from best buy will it have still have a three year warranty? I have never had a hd failure, i'm on my second hd. the first was a maxtor and after 5 years it is still good and my current one is a wd and i've had it for about a year and half. thanks.

The "P-code" drives have an 8MB cache and also carry a three-year warranty. If you enter your serial number and drive info on the Maxtor website, it will show you that even though your box said one-year warranty and 2MB cache, you really got an 8MB cache with a three-year warranty.

Tonight I stopped by CompUSA and they had a ton of these drives in stock. About 3/4 of them had the 8MB cache. I bought one there and then I'll buy another one at Best Buy on Sunday and return the CompUSA drive. If the Best Buy drive is the 2MB model, I'll just switch them and return that one to CompUSA.

Good luck.

Same here, only ATi solutions.

I'll third that motion.

I got the 80GB WD w/8MB at CC for $69 AR and the 80GB Maxtor w/8MB at Compusa for $69 AR last weekend. I benchmarked both drives using Sisoft Sandra 2003. The Maxtor (Compusa house brand) beat the WD drive hands down. Both drives were very quiet but I'd have to give the edge to the Maxtor.

Some drives may be optimized for certain benchmarks, without providing a real world advantage. Check Storagereview.com to see how they compared on a variety of tests.
