Sorry, I should have mentioned I already had the Raspberry 3 a coworker gave me for free. I never even looked up their cost until you mentioned it so I guess it will cost quite a bit more than $7 to build a Retro Pi. Still, if you have a phone/tablet/PC/handheld (PSP, Vita, etc.)/laptop, etc., you can still emulate it for free. If you only have a phone and want to be able to hook it up to your TV, then you'll need a USB hub (about $10) and a USB OTG cable ($2) in order to hook your phone to your TV while playing with a controller.

"Free".

Look, I'm not outright demonizing PC/phone emulation. Lord knows I've dabbled in it myself. But presenting it as an alternative to a legitimate product like the SNES Classic is disingenuous. Fact is that acquiring ROMs (that you didn't dump yourself) is a form of warez and you are committing an act of piracy. It's "free" in the same sense that shoplifting is free.

Technically, am I allowed to make one backup of my vintage cartridge games if I want to? I forget.

It's only piracy if you don't own a physical copy of the game. I'm sure I'm not the only one here with a vast collection of older games neatly packed away in storage. Downloading a copy of a game you already own is perfectly legal as long as it remains unmodified. If you choose to use that copy so you don't wear out your physical copy, that is legal as well. I know this thread will get closed or posts will get deleted and infractions doled out if the mods think we are advocating illegal methods. This is not the case.

Yes. You can have one physical copy and one digital backup. This goes for all forms of media (books, movies, music, games, etc.).

Right. And you own physical copies of all those 300 or so games you talked about downloading, and would never use your RetroPie to emulate a game you don't physically own, is that correct?

I know it's fine to make your own ROM dump of a game you physically own, but downloading it from elsewhere? At the very least it's illegal for whatever website you download from, as they don't have distribution rights whether or not you have a copy of the game. And they never check if you do, anyway. If everyone was following the law you still wouldn't be able to obtain the ROMS of the games that way.

Nintendo officially says "no," but you're entitled to a backup by law and Nintendo cannot prevent you from doing it.

This is simply wrong. You can make your own backups, but downloading off the internet is piracy, full stop.

This is only true if you don't circumvent DRM in the process. It sucks to have to add that, but the DMCA does not allow circumventing DRM even with the intent of making a backup.

LOL @ the whole "backup" argument to try and justify piracy as being legal.

Yeah because most people who use MAME own the real arcade games...

...and SNES Classic Edition is the only way to own Star Fox 2 legitimately.

Mario changed my filter on his own!

If you leave the menu idol Mario will jump around and do certain things like play back your game play. But he also changed the filter and it didn't revert back when I picked up the controller to play again, it stayed at what Mario changed it to.

Is there a 3rd party adapter for the controller port nintendo uses for these classic consoles that converts it to usb? 8bitdo knock offs are all well and good, but if we could use these snes or nes classic controllers with our raspberry emulators it would be cool.
All the groundwork happened in 2006.

You simply plug it into a Wii Remote and then pair it over Bluetooth with existing Wii Remote Classic Controller libraries. Really easy!

Did they say that most of the people using ME were doing so legally? No? Then contradiction not found.

The problem with this is that sometimes with emulation you find events are no longer synced to the beats of the soundtrack because the game is running faster than the hardware it was intended to run on. It can be a bit jarring.
Yes. Even the physical cartridges that are overclocked do this.

Example: The Corneria intro where Dan Owsen talks never even gets to the "Prepare for launch!" part before the scene/music changes.

That's all they got? Wow I have eight Gamestops within 20 miles of me that are listed as having them in stock. I figured these would be really hot items considering the quality of games they have.
For some reason GameStop lists preordered units as in-stock for availability checks. Stupid, I know.

I'd love it if they released this pack of 21 games on Switch. A Link to the Past and Super Mario World on handheld mode would be glorious.
These were both released on GBA and play on the Nintendo DS.

I'm getting nervous about my Wal-Mart pre-order from 8/25. Supposed to be here on the 3rd but it's still at "Preparing order" and no pending charge on my CC. Seems like a ton of others are having the same problem and after talking with customer service, they were told that if it doesn't ship out within ten days it will be canceled (per policy). Seems kinda screwed up that pre-order means "maybe you'll get it, or maybe you won't." Back in my day, pre-order meant you were guaranteed the item on launch day.

Apparently, Amazon is also having a problem fulfilling pre-orders, but somehow had enough for its Treasure Trucks.

Oh well, I'm still banking on the fact that there will be more waves of shipments and I'll be able to get one at Target or Best Buy. Congrats to anyone who got one on Friday.

As someone who had her SNES Classic Walmart preorder canceled a month ago, I feel your pain. But that Amazon is not fulfilling the orders of their customers so they can use the stock instead to promote their treasure truck program is an extremely crappy thing to do.

My fiancée ordered one at midnight Thursday night through Target. They canceled it around 3am for some reason but gave her a $50 credit. She picked one up in store at target so we made out pretty good in the end.

Strange. When he demonstrates the filter modes on NES CE, the setting always reverts as you pick up the controller.

And yet Nintendo will sell you the roms via their console store that are often the same files one could download via piracy.

No, it's the same ROM that was on the original game cartridge.
I noticed it's at least the 1.2 revision of Donkey Kong Country (based on some of the glitches that cannot be performed). I also noticed that there's no screen flash from Squawks the Parrot's flashlight when he switches directions. Probably an intentional change to play it safe and avoid triggering epileptic seizure. Makes me wonder if it was implemented by modifying the ROM, having a game-specific tweak in the emulator, or by having a system-wide video filter (which NES CE definitely does).

I mentioned that on another forum and someone suggested it might have been that way with the Wii U virtual console download for DKC.

...files to which Nintendo already owns the intellectual property rights or has a distribution licensing agreement with the IP owner.

Understand?

Doesn't really matter in the end the SNES classic is emulation, therefore, any arguments that it is somehow 'better' are null. If you want to buy such an item, so be it, but quit demonizing anyone else who knows there are other ways to go about the same thing without the BS attached to it. Guarantee there isn't a single one of you here who is 100% legit on everything you have other the years.
