I remember when my mother sold my nintendo to pay some guy for his work on the house one day because I had just gotten super nintendo and she figured there was no need to keep the older set. It broke my heart to lose my classic games. Then years later Nintendo came out with the NES 101 and asked my mother to get it for me.

I had seen one for $50 in a Toys R Us along with a brand new Gray edition of Zelda for 10. Even my original copy of Zelda had come used and I never got the manual with the lovely artwork in it that I had seen at a friends, much less ever had a new copy. I begged my mother to get it, but unfortunately it was five days before my birthday so she told me it would have to wait as a birthday present. We came back 5 days later and the last copy of the game was gone. I Still got the system at least. But I missed out on a brand new gray copy of Zelda after my mother got rid of my gold originals without so much as asking.
Did you get Link to the Past later?

Link to The Past was the first stand alone Super Nintendo game I ever got. (Super Mario World came bundled in) I got my used NES back in 89 when I was 5. I Think I got the SNES for Christmas in 91 and LtTP for my birthday in July of 92. Shortly after my mother got rid of my NES and originals games. I don't think the NES 101 came around until a couple years after that, when I attempted to rebuild my original collection.

I got my SNES after the Super Mario All-Stars free-by-mail offer was extended ('93?). I think I had to wait a year or so before I got Zelda. I actually got a Game Boy and played through Link's Awakening before any other Zelda game. It's still my favorite game in the series to this day, LttP being #2.

What made you prefer it over LtTP? Nostalgia? Link to The Past will always be my all time favorite, though I did enjoy Link's Awakening. My fondest memory? Stealing bow and arrows from the shop keep only for Link to die horribly to torrents of lightning. Who knew the shop keep was a Sith Lord?

Probably some of my preference can be attributed to the fact that I completed Link's Awakening before I played Link to the Past. I think the story in Link's Awakening and the bittersweet ending was really compelling. I also think quirky and serious content was balanced much better than it was in later games. There's a small alteration to the ending when you complete it with 0 deaths (relevant to a conversation Marin had with Link earlier in the game). Compared to the monochrome version, I think the color DX version was much less subtle.

The monochrome version has an easy way to avoid deaths: If you hold A+B+Start+Select as Link is spinning around dying, the save screen comes up instead of the Game Over screen. You can save and it doesn't count as a death.

You can also save your game at the right time to "steal" from the shop without slipping through the door. It also avoids having your character branded "Thief!" for the rest of the game.

Make sure you're already holding B as you go up to the items and press A to pick one up. Continue holding B as you press A to talk to the shop keeper. When it gets to the "Buy? Yes/No" selection, highlight "Yes." While still holding B, start holding Start+Select. Press and hold "A." It will choose "Yes" to buy, and it will bring up the save screen at the same time (since you are now holding A+B+Start+Select). Save and quit, then start your file again. You have the item, but your rupees never had a chance to count down. The only reason you have to awkwardly hold B the whole time is because pressing B any time after you've picked up the item will put the item back or cancel the conversation, so you have to keep it held the entire time. You could just purchase the item and save immediately, but it will probably suck a few rupees from you before you can do it. Even though you don't lose any rupees, you still must have enough for the item or it won't work.

You may yet avoid being branded a thief by the game through even more elaborate technical trickery. But you'll always carry that in your heart instead.

That's why I always win my rupees legitimately at the crane game

Man it pisses me off how much all these "reproduction" carts that have flooded the market have tumbled the value of most of my rarest games. My copy of Conker and Ninja Gaiden Trilogy used to go for over $200 on ebay. Now they go for about 20. Mega Man X2 and X3 on the other hand, the only two SNES games I ever sold when I was a kid, (for $7 each no less) are worth a god damned fortune. I sorely wish I had not been so stupid. I could really use the cash.

Thankfully, X2 and X3 can't be easily reproduced on a functional SNES cart since they had a special co-processor in the cartridge that was never used by any other game.

I used to want Ninja Gaiden Trilogy (SNES) back in the day, because I loved the NES trilogy. I saw it mentioned in Nintendo Power. I never saw it in stores to rent or buy. I finally played it on emulators many years later and realized they completely ruined the music. The NES versions still sound amazing to this day, but it sounds absolutely awful on SNES.

I sold 2 sealed copies of Conker's Bad Fur Day on eBay 2 years ago for over $300 each. That was before N64 reproductions started appearing from AliBaba sellers.

N64 works alright on a Retropie Pi3. Mario cart is flawless, as is mario 64. Some games do lag a little, overclocking helps that alot. But can only really be run at the N64 native res, up scaling the Pi3 is not powerful enough.

Ive been having the most fun these past few days playing GBA games on the retropie, they run flawlessly even upscaled. And they remade alot of games for the GBA from older systems like NES and SNES/Genesis which are a blast to play again in their remastered forms.

SNES games ported to GBA were mostly a downgrade. Colors modified for contrast on the original GBA's non-lit screen. There's much less viewable screen area due to lower resolution. Music (one of the strengths of the SNES) is very watered down.

This is true for SNES ports. Games like FF6 had their incredible soundtracks butchered. The addition of an annoying dungeon and a new boss do not offset this. Plus the top and bottom are cropped. For NES ports however, there are some exceptions. Games like Kirby: Nightmare in Dreamland clearly look better than the original. I'm guessing it's titles of that sort he was referring to.

If I can't get a SNES Mini retail, I'm boycotting Nintendo.

I really wanted to with the way these classic consoles have been handled, but I love my Switch so much I think I've softened up to Nintendo. The Switch is fantastic for my uses, and I'm playing more games that I had been before because I can play on my couch without hogging the TV.

I probably won't get an NES Classic since I already got a pre-order for the SNES Classic. It'll eventually be hacked, so the only advantage of getting a NES Classic is to have the official controller, which I think you can buy separately anyways.

I would not be so sure on it being hacked this time, the SNES classic or the NES one being rereleased next year. The convenience of being able to move files over via usb seemed like an oversight by Nintendo. One that they may not repeat when building a new one from the ground up.

Mostly true, the NES ones were better, the FF 1&2 remake was fun to play again. But even the watered down SNES ports that add some content adds to the enjoyment of playing a game you have already beaten a few times, even if the graphics and music do suffer a little.

Then there are remakes like Shining Force: Resurrection of dark dragon which is essentially a Shining force remake that adds both better artwork as well as a whole new game dynamic with the character cards and new character to use them.

GBA was IMO one of the better Nintendo systems, it got alot of great games.

To discourage 90% of hacked units, all Nintendo needs to do is leave the USB data lines disconnected.

Also, it was FAR more difficult to get the official controller than to get the NES Classic Edition. I wasted hours each day for months, trying. Never even saw one until I had to spend $90 to get the controller from a game vendor at a swap meet.

You might think you’ve seen them, but that’s 1,000% likely to be an unlicensed knock-off. Stores everywhere happily sold them all along. It doesn't make sense that unlicensed manufacturers could flood the market with counterfeits and Nintendo couldn't get any of them out there. Most of the stores around here that got NES Classic Edition never got a single official "CLV A CNES USZ" controller in a separate retail box.

$90 for the US boxed controller is a steal today if that's what you got. As I'm sure you know, I've seen them on ebay for more than the consoles are selling at $250. I doubt Nintendo made more than 50k of them for the US. I ended up buying two EU controllers for $75 each. Only difference is the box. The controllers are identical. But I'm hoping for the re-release they also put out some more controllers, and not just include an extra in the box like they're doing for the SNESC. I want $9.99 replacement parts, dammit!

Exactly! My brother and I refurbish old NES consoles and install Hi-Def NES.

On 2016-11-11, one of the first things I did with my NES Classic Edition was test that parts could swap between an original controller and the new ones. Everything fits fine in both directions (though one way requires a little fiddling with the orientation). I'd love to buy dozens of these controllers to make "like new" refurbished controllers that work with a real original NES.

...How much?

Market value seems very high at the moment since the supply for Hi-Def NES and UltraHDMI have dried up. I think my brother and I are the only installers that have any kits on-hand. If supply ever comes back to satisfy demand, then prices can normalize.

I bought the last 4 kits ever sold from the source (game-tech.us) over 1 month ago. I have 1 of them up for sale on eBay (link) and I'm still sitting on another.

I also bought someone's failed install attempt on eBay -- an NES board with soldered interposers and a Hi-Def NES board, but no CPU or PPU chips to go in the interposers. My brother put another CPU and PPU in and it works fine. It's possible that person's CPU and/or PPU was bad, or was damaged when attempting to desolder them (the most difficult part of the install if you don't have the correct equipment).

Jason Rausch of Game-Tech.us (the only source for Hi-Def NES kits) said in a recent interview that Kevin "Kevtris" Horton (brilliant creator of Hi-Def NES, Jason's business partner) is occupied by a contract job with an NDA clause. He said the next manufacturing run of Hi-Def NES isn't even on the radar. My last kits will probably go on eBay as auction format to see what the current market value really is.

The kits I have sold recently:

$190 for Hi-Def NES kit + installation (NintendoAge member Tbone sent his NES to me)
http://nintendoage.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=56&threadid=176506
In hindsight, I probably didn't charge enough. Beating the price of established modders, but I have been the only one with any kits at all for a while now.
Used a red board from my previous order.

$345.00 for NES-101 top loader with Hi-Def NES kit installed (eBay fixed-price listing)
http://www.ebay.com/itm/132312643371
Used one of my yellow boards from the most recent order.

[traded kit+install for some gaming stuff] (NintendoAge member A2600 sent his NES to me)
http://nintendoage.com/forum/messageview.cfm?StartRow=1&catid=5&threadid=176458
Used a red board from my previous order.

$380.00 for NES-101 top loader with Hi-Def NES kit installed (eBay fixed-price listing)
http://www.ebay.com/itm/132273148763
Per buyer's request, I ended up using one of my yellow boards from the most recent order instead of the red one pictured.

I've been focusing more on UltraHDMI for N64. I got the last 21 of those kits. Each modified N64 has been selling for >$400 within hours of going on sale. I'm finally testing an auction format to figure out what it's really worth (link). I really like this one and would love to keep it for myself
