And to think I was actually online while it was still in stock but was screwed on account of my mother needing to borrow my last dollar to get through the month. sigh.

EDIT: Damn, added it to my cart. Hit checkout, became unavailable. They add tax anyways... I'm hoping to get it from B&H Photo.

Seriously, mine did that too, add to cart, check out, sold out

And did the same thing on Target, added to cart, wouldn't let me check out and it's gone.

I don't understand how people can even get something that fast when I was literally refreshing Walmart and Target non stop and its sold out in literal seconds

This is why I don't try for these things anymore. The systems these companies use are just awful. Why allow me to add this to my cart if you don't have inventory? Why tell me the reason my payment failed is due to an error instead of the fact that you're out of inventory?

My Target experience was basically futility. Add preorder to cart. Smoothly sail to payment. Payment fails. 5x. Try a different card. Payment fails 5x. Then item just disappears from cart.

New school gaming experience there.

I also enjoy that Gamestop sends me a text telling me they're in stock with a link that takes me to the page where I can ask to be notified when in stock. And I can't find the product on the site anywhere.

I'm thinking the professional scalpers have a system in place to jerry rig it in their favor by automatically buying a product in multiples the very split second they go live. How else do you explain these Ebay pictures of the original NES Classic where they have some 50 units stacked together like a pyramid?

I'd ask those of you that stand to get a second if they'd help me out and sell it to me for msrp plus the cost of tax and shipping, but who am I kidding... I might as well ask for a free hundred dollars.

Managed to get one for my wife who loves Nintendo. I had amazon.com, amazon.ca, target, walmart, eb games all going at once. When they showed up they were sold out by the time I reached payment processing at every one of them except for bestbuy.ca

It's a shame Nintendo supply constrains these items to the point they are a prime target for scalpers using bots to buy them all out and flip them for 300% of MSRP. I put the blame on Nintendo more than the scalpers. They could make more. Hell, they could make more of the NES Classics from last year and probably sell a few million more. Maybe they don't like making money?

I wonder if you would have got one if you didn't waste those precious seconds letting us know

Poor guy...

I don't know... I feel like we're blaming Nintendo without having enough information. Although, if I was a scalper, I'd definitely try to get my hands on these and as many as I could. They already have a great idea of how well they'll sell out as we've already seen the Nintendo Classic last year. Scalpers will pretty much get anything that may be popular... especially if they can just return without a fee it if it doesn't end up selling. For them, it's a bit of effort (to buy and list on eBay or Craigslist) and a minor monetary investment with no tangible losses if it doesn't work (only the time to buy and sell).

Retailers generally didn't allow one person to purchase multiple units for NES Classic. The only way scalpers get dozens of units is by having inside connections (most likely employees of retailers and distributors).

bestbuy.com wasn't limiting quantities at online checkout.

Probably an oversight. Probably that tried to order 3 or more would get an email from Best Buy saying they'll only be allowed to purchase 1 or 2 or have the order canceled.

Best Buy pulled some shady business with the Switch where they played with the release date in their system so they could charge my card 3 months in advance.

This doesn't surprise me much at all. They turned away millions of dollars in sales by making the NES Classic difficult to get. This was a hot item and there is ZERO chance that they did NOT know it. They just chose to not bother to try to fill the demand and instead of completing a triangle of revenue with Switch, 3ds line, and then retro consoles....they tossed a lot of money right out the window. I expect the same on this one.

They KNOW the demand is high and they also know that they can meet that demand......but they'll choose not to. They'll make it difficult to impossible to get one and blame it on "not realizing how big the demand was". I really really hope I'm wrong on that but I don't have high hopes after the fiasco with the NES Mini. I was expecting them to pull a similar move again.

Anyway, for those that got in on the preorder, congrats. For the rest, hopefully they will do it again or you'll be able to find one soon after launch. I'm not holding my breath on this one. If there happen to be lots of extra, I might pick one up. Otherwise, I'm not gonna put much effort into something that they don't seem to want many people to have. If I'm wrong, feel free to let me know. I'll fess up to it if I'm wrong about it. Just my .02....

Nintendo knows they're treating their fans like crap. The point is when everyone is in a frenzy over stock constantly it keeps Nintendo's name in the news. It's free advertising for the brand. Gamespot must have made a fortune in ad revenue from all the times they reposted the snes classic news story with no updates. And that's the whole point. When you have artificial scarcity you have people lining up at the door of retailers for hours before hand. Maybe the media gets involved and gives coverage to this "must have" Christmas gift everyone is going nuts over. Everywhere you look online at gaming websites are constantly updated news articles on where to find the latest stock and speculation on potential second batches of preorders, hence more exposure for Nintendo in general.

I don't know. I guess it works on some level. But I think there is a price to be paid in goodwill in the long term for constantly treating their fans in this fashion again and again. Gamers are starting to wake up to Nintendo's artificial scarcity shtick and if they continue it all the way to the end of the SNES Classic's run and double down on it yet again with the N64 classic next year I think it's safe to say their relationship with their fans will be tarnished.

I understand the exposure part. But.....companies want exposure to make money. Exposure can work for you or against you depending on your actions. The initial exposure is generally good.....since they are hyping a new product. However, after they do this and the product is launched with virtually no stock of the merchandise, the exposure becomes negative because people don't like being played with. I understand that things sell out and are hard to get. I get that and I think a lot of people do. Having a hot product means that it's probably going to sell out...for a few days...or a few weeks. When the product is sold out for a few MONTHS, something is wrong there.

I think that Nintendo has already tarnished the relationship with at least some of the fans by making so many things difficult to get, when there is no reason. You want exposure for a product.......make the product available for people to purchase. Then you get the good exposure that you seek. When you essentially launch a handful of something that millions want, and you knew ahead of time that millions would want it, you deserve that bad exposure. Kinda like the old saying "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me." We'll see how people react to this and if Nintendo has learned anything from the last one. I really don't think they have but, again, I hope I'm wrong. I guess we'll all just have to wait and find out.
