So what kind of rounds are they firing that it has enough punch left after 1.5 miles of travel? Guessing .338 since I think they're not allowed to use the 50 cal on human targets, though terrorist might not apply.

uh no.

just one

it also list a few other rifles. There was a cool show about USMC snipers on the military channel.

AFAIK all uber long range modern shots are made by .50s the m82a1 - m95 etc.

As for drop, http://www.barrett.net/ammunition/50bmg there is a lot.
.338 Lapua Magnum actually out-performs the .50 cal in long-range consistency and flatter trajectory, but is only effective against "soft" targets at these ranges (i.e. humans without any significant protection or body armor). The .50 cal still packs more wallop at any distance and is the better choice when there is body armor or light obstructions, but isn't as accurate/consistent for these super LR shots.

a distance so great, experts say the terrorists wouldn't have even heard the shots.

I mean, no shit right? The bullet travels supersonic, so it will always arrive before the sound. Given the first guy was killed on the first shot, it's pretty much a no brainer that he didn't hear the shot.

But it does preclude you from trying to tell someone else "what it's all about".

Telling him off for commending our soldiers and the reasons they go back to fight, even if he hasn't done it himself and even if he isn't completely correct, makes no sense. There is a polite way to correct someone's statement and get your point across, and then there is what you did.

Dayum. You kinda wonder what they looked like after those hits. On second thought, I don't want to know.

I think they mean that even if they weren't hit, they wouldn't have heard it because it was so far away.

He attempted to "correct" me first, and from a postion of not knowing what he was talking about. Which in itself bothered me. I'm not the one trying to tell someone "how it is". But for him to come in and say I'M wrong? From "what he's heard", shiiiiiiiit.

i watched the video again. you're right... there are two guys definitely carrying aks... but the "rpg" wasn't an rpg... it was a camera. that was saeed with the camera taking pictures. you can see him putting his camera away when the apache comes around the building.

sidenote: i find it ironic how you guys are all about gun rights, except when other people have them.

hindsight = 20/20

Oh come on eits, you're smarter than that.

then we must be a nation borne of terrorists.

just because they're the enemy doesn't mean they're terrorists. their perception matters and they're fighting against what they perceive as an occupation. they're insurgents... not terrorists. they have no interest in fighting anyone other than us in order to try and kick us out of their country.

There are freedom fighters in Afghanistan, but they fight AGAINST the Taliban, not with them. The USA is allied with the majority of the local populace. You know, the ones who DON'T like getting beheaded by extremists.

I'm glad you respect cowards, it reveals a lot about yourself and the sheer surrealism of your views.

The Japanese were to be respected. These guys are raggedy parasites who have to coerce the population into following them. Their driven by a hatred for freedom, their own people don't like them (in fact most terrorists in Iraq aren't even Iraqi--they're from Syria!)

The Taliban is composed of the old order who want to control their country by whatever means possible--they're not interested in the new rising democratic order that is far more liberal than these glorified bullies.

This has nothing to do with perception, it has everything to do with reality, and if anyone's perception is skewed, it's yours, but I'm glad you bring that out for everyone to see.

You have absolutely no idea what the Taliban is, do you? They're not "freedom fighters" protecting their homeland. They don't care about the Afghani people at all. They're a giant drug cartel fueled by religious fundamentalism. They have a set of ideals they want to force on the populace (which is mostly allied with us) and they don't care about personal freedoms. They're a bunch of terrorist assholes.

Hmm maybe.

I'm not quite so sure though. I live nearby an army base, and I hear machine gun fire off in the distance. I'm almost certain they're at least 2 miles away. Maybe it's not an accurate comparison...

I dunno, I'm looking too much into that one statement, I suppose.

w00t. Way to murder people protecting their homeland from invaders!

We lost another Canadian soldier today. My son is over there as an infantry soldier doing his bit. The Taliban cannot be allowed to run Afghanistan and I am glad we are doing something about it. If you would look into why the Taliban are fighting us you would not be spewing idealistic garbage.

Here are a few things the Taliban stand for:

Execute teenagers for eloping!
Taliban Lash 17 Year Old Girl

Most Shocking Video Ever: 12 Year Old Taliban Boy Beheads Man

Like I said, I am glad we are fighting to eliminate this plague. It's just too bad the US took it's eyes off the ball when they went to Iraq.

Not taking either side on this, but interestingly, under the Taliban, poppy production in Afghanistan was at an all time low before the war. They restarted production to fund the war against the U.S.

During the Taliban rule, Afghanistan saw a bumper opium crop of 4,500 metric tons in 1999. In July 2000, Taliban leader Mullah Mohammed Omar declared that growing poppies was un-Islamic, resulting in one of the world's most successful anti-drug campaigns. As a result of this ban, opium poppy cultivation was reduced by 91% from the previous year's estimate of 82,172 hectares. The ban was so effective that Helmand Province, which had accounted for more than half of this area, recorded no poppy cultivation during the 2001 season.

"didn't hear the shots"

I think they did. The muzzle report, maybe not, because the bullets were supersonic for a while, but near the end of the trip the bullets probably went subsonic which means they heard some whizzing before they died. Could be wrong about that, though, and if the bullets were supersonic for the whole flight they definitely wouldn't have heard anything.
