Sorry to bump a slightly old thread, but I wanted to point out to the student teachers that once you're a teacher, you won't like snow days. They screw up your planning. i.e. if you're planning on having a test on Friday, it'll get pushed back a day to Monday. And, tests on Mondays usually don't don't have as good of results as tests any other day of the week.
Also, those snow days are built into the calendar. At the school districts I'm familiar with, if the snow days aren't used by mid spring, they're tacked onto a 3 day weekend to extend it to a 4 or 5 day weekend. (Quite often, Memorial Day here.) So, which would you rather have? A day off on a day when it might be nice out, or a day off when it's guaranteed to be crappy outside? Your contract will spell this out when you're a teacher - the number of days you have to work.
trmiv - having to report in on days when there is a snow day almost seems like a good idea to me. However, as far as "training day" - probably only in name in that type of a situation. At my district, there are a lot of quality things that are done on training days. I can't imagine one of those days being run at the spur of the moment, and especially when you know that a lot of the teachers are going to be late getting in. (Our teachers come in from up to an hour away; the average is probably at least a 20 minute drive.)
