Snow Leopard Purchase

*Apologies, it was lion, not snow leopard.

My wife has a macbook that she bought a while back. I am not sure what happened but over the past few years it had accumulated something that cause it to be unbearable. It would sit on the spinning wheel for 5 minutes at a time. Anyway, long story short we restored to factory. Only problem is, she had purchased Lion a while back so that she could upgrade. She was on the OS before el capitan when we reset it.

My question is, do we have to repurchase Lion, or is there somewhere we can put in her account and it allows us to re-download it? I can't find anything in itunes or on the app store on apple.com

I have a mac, but I am not familiar with the eco system, I pretty much just do photo stuff.

Looking back, she must have installed snow leopard first, cause it wouldn't allow her to install Lion without it.

In the app store, under the "purchased" section, it should show previous OS versions as long as you are signed in. For instance, when I check it on my system it shows, Lion, Mountain Lion, Mavericks, and Yosemite all available for download.

Apple didn't offer downloadable OS updates until they introduced the App Store, IIRC. So if you restored and ended up on Leopard, then you would have needed to purchase the physical version of Snow Leopard to install it in the first place.

Though to be honest, you're so many versions back that getting a fresh install of Yosemite going may be the more practical option.

I am getting it ready to sell. She doesn't use it anymore. She has a fancy pancy windows laptop/tablet she got from work.

I guess I will just leave it as in then. Not putting money into it.

I remember buying snow leopard as I had mountain lion or so. Then my built in dvd drive stopped working . I think I had to burrow a friends external or I did something else with it?!

There are a bunch of machines that fall in the category of "Macbook" that shipped with Tiger or Leopard and cannot be upgraded past 10.7. Yosemite/El Cap isn't really gonna work for a machine that old. There are some that will though, so it depends on the model.
