That shitty shitty time of the year for us in the north.... have to say goodbye to the rims and sticky tires for stock and boring.

You've got a decently powered rwd car, what are you complaining about loss of traction for? This time of year can be equally as fun.

When I've all the time in the world to go nowhere, agreed 100%

... when I'm on the way to work surrounded by other cars and 5" of snow, not as much fun.

Stupid question but is changing a set of tires basically like changing 4 spares?

I just picked up a second set of wheels with tires on them... wondering if I could just throw them on myself (though using the cappy jack that comes with the car would suck).

I always put them on / take them off myself... only takes 30 mins at most (with a bigger jack). If your allignment is good and the wheels / tires have been balanced, you should be fine.

Only thing I have to do is get the TPMS sensors recalibrated to the new tires since they run at a different PSI than my summer ones.

Oh, I just love that time of year. Don't you love the 1 hour 8 mile commute?

What blows my mind is the fact that most of the people on the roads have been dealing with snow their whole driving lives and somehow still manage to turn into worthless turds at the first sign of snow on the roads.... its amazing how people "forget" how to drive in the stuff after 6-8 months.

That first week is the most fun, I should be on the ready with my camera this year. People piled up on medians, cars hanging off bridges, its like the end of the world!

Get a jack, jack-stands, a breaker bar, and torque wrench and you'll be off to the races.

If you're doing winter wheels/tires, I would also suggest anti-seize.

I also used to put antisieze on the hub where it meets the wheel. It helps avoid needing to kick the wheel off despite having all the lugs removed.

Snow? It seems like I should know what that word means... but I don't.

Oh wait, is that the pretty white stuff I see on the tops of the mountains here between December and March?

Err, just buy a beater 4wd truck or mid 90's explorer/blazer. Leave the car in the garage until spring.

We have two parking spaces in condo building's ramp.... even still I would want snow tires

I have never had this issue, and Ohio loves to use boatloads of salt.

It's the best time of year to drive in the north. Snow tires and Subaru AWD is lots of fun.

You can have tons of fun with any car in the north in the snow.

BTW-I only managed to get two cars stuck when I lived in the northeast, the first was a SAAB and the other was a Subaru AWD.

I started the process today... put the snow tires on the WRX.

Then, went to put the new tires/wheels on the Fiat that I just bought.

Problem.

The Fiat came with those anti-theft screws. Well, the "key" fits around the screw head. The new wheels won't let the "key" work - the holes are too small.

Same with my car....stock rims and tires use "standard" lug nuts, the aftermarket ones have thin profile lug holes.... two sets of lugs and then I need sockets to get the aftermarket lugs off.

I have a jack and stands... do I need a torque wrench or can I just tighten em 'tight'?

Had a bit of snow today here.. Just insane.. Only Oct 24
I haven't even purchased snow tires yet for my newer car.. My old ones won't fit. Sucks.
I normally wouldnt put them on this early anyway.. I'm an early December kinda guy usually for snow tire installs.

Saw that, they got hammered up near Owen Sound.

I've never used snows on my cars. Unless you're driving RWD with a really light back end, they're not really necessary in the city. There's maybe three days a year where they'd make a big difference. Work considers me an essential employee though so I can always just stay at a hotel near by if there's a really bad storm, and expense it.

Bah. Fuck snow, fuck snow tires. I leave my Charger in the garage and drive my wife's Forester. We have the stock all seasons on it and they're fine in the snow. I work from home and even though I have to generally be out and about covering the storm, it's rare I actually have to cruise around before the plows do their job. So I don't really need snow tires. I think I've actually driven in the actual storm with snow on the roads once or twice in the past five years. Can't justify spending the money on tires for a rare event. It has been snowing a lot here over the past few winters, but when I'm on the roads, they tend to be clear.
