Snowboarders .. wtf is your problem?

So, the mountain I used to ski during my younger years opened early this season and I went up yesterday for a few hours. The first thing I noticed was that snowboarders outnumber skiers at least 7-8 to 1. Ok, whatever. But what's the deal with 1) falling every 15-20 yards and then lying in the middle of the trail for 5-10 minutes 2) only boarding in packs of 5+ such that when you want to take a break, you lie on the ground in the same packs of 5+ completely obscuring the beginning (usually) of a trail. I spent more time yesterday avoiding seated boarders and trying to doge falling ones than actually spending time skiing normally. What gives? It got so bad I actually had 2 out of control snowboarders hit the tails of my skis while calling out in distress. Luckily, I was able to regain control each time .. although I did level the first kid with an elbow as a tried to balance myself.

Are the majority of boarders just idiots? Or was this just early season bullocks?

You nailed it. I'm a snowboarder and I can't put up with half the jackasses on the mountain. That it's early in the season probably doesn't help, though.

i think skill lacking idiots is a better term. same problems out here. snowboarders fall into two categories. good and obstacle.

there are mountains on the east coast? shouldn't a mountain have a treeline?

So true. I want to get out west again, but it just isn't happening anytime soon. In the meantime I'll just keep my all-mountain carvers and skate around on the ice.

My buddy and I make it a habit to pick opposite sides of the snowboarder (obstacle) and powder him as necessary. Unless, of course, it's a cute chick, then we just have to suck it up.

Some of the best skiing on the east coast. I agree with the OP though, I'm not gonna incriminate anyone for their skill level, but snowboarders need to not sit in the middle of the trail in groups of 10+. GTF out of the way. The park mostly belongs to you guys so go chill there.

agreed. It's not so much snowboarders as it is all of the newbs you see on the slopes are boarding rather than skiing.

also, east coast skiing sucks, so that's a double wammy. Well, northeast is pretty good, i guess.

ever heard of the Appalaichans? incredible range, different kind of mountains from the Rockies--completely tree-covered.

skiing sucks in comparison, though. I grew up in NC....don't even mention those slopes

Mount Washington and area is nice, though.

LIES!

Northeast is decent, but not in the same league as what is found out West.

West Virginia and below is truly laughable.

i'm scratching my head on that one. i think between colorado and utah most locations on the east coast are gonna have a hard time competing. Some of the best double black diamonds are in colorado (crested butte nonetheless) and there is something to be said about skiing above 8000'.

but, i guess it's all in the eye of the beholder. can't argue with an opinion, can only have my own.

yeah, hiked them last year. my favorite thing about the AT is when i saw all the cars with bumper stickers that said something like "this car conquered mt. washington"... i haven't laughed so hard in a long time. the only part of the AT i don't like is Georgia, too many stupid rocks.
i have family in virginia and we do a lot of small hikes, did dragon tooth this year (revisiting last year)

by the way. if anyone needs the thruhiker AT guides, i'm willing to sell mine. it's got an updated NY/NJ book.

I can say the same as skiers, although I admit it's not nearly as bad. Been boarding for 20 years. Picture a few chics falling down and chuckling at each other.

For the most part it is a lack of skill and over all respect and following the rules. You've got lots of newbs jumping on a board and not following the rules of the slope.

Do your part and yell at them as they sit on their ass and spray them, or go to a more advanced slope.

on the other hand, West Virginia has the best ATV trail system. Hatfield Mccoy far beats out anything we have, as colorado isn't the best about marking trails and utah likes to tell you how hard it is once your are six miles in...I have nothing but admiration for the work WV has done in making a fantastic trail system.

At least snowboards are attached to the people sprawled
In my experience, all of the morons who want to be cool get a snowboard, and try to look awesome while sucking
If skiing was the "cool" way to hit the slopes, there would be oodles of morons trying that to.

Think how bad it would be if poles and ejected skis were all over the slope in addition to the obstacles

It was skiing only for many, many years prior to snowboarding and it was not nearly as irritating as the "snowboarding era" has been. I do agree, though, it's nothing against snowboarding as a sport, it's just that there are too many people boarding on slopes where they have no business being. They just refuse to stick to the easy slopes because it's not as cool.

As a boarder who wasn't allowed on the slopes for a long time skiing was just as "cool".

Tell them to get off their ass and get down the slope.

If boarders are that much of a problem for you then you need to learn how to ski better. It's like a moving obstacle course, just like skiers are.

Boarding or skiing lots of people go above their skill level. Yell at them, spray them and tell them to get off the trail. Good thing about boarding is you are much more maneuverable and faster.

It's "cool" to snowboard, even if you just fall on your ass. I prefer to put on a pair of skis and actually be able to go fast without falling on my ass. And when you fall on skis, it's pretty spectacular!

Your not talking about boarders binding up at the beginning of the trail are you?
No, they're talking about how noob boarders go down 20 feet, fall on their asses, and sit there blocking the trail.

It's really fun to watch skilled boarders, though - it's amazing what they can do with a little change in balance.
