It's a movie based off a comic book that was inspired by a movie that was based off a historical event.

i think i said that.

I remember when Episode III of Star Wars came out and they said that Anakin's dialog before he fought Obi-Wan was to reflect some of the then recent Bush speeches (with us or against us). The whole idea is laughable.

LOL at the fanboys popping out of the woodwork. Perhaps you should just laugh at the reviews instead of being angry at them.

I'm not angry. I don't give a fvck about what someone says about any movie, I watch it and decide for myself.

Exactly. This movie is just supposed to be a cool movie about the Spartans. Sheesh.

Are straight men really that skeeved by seeing a male in warrior attire? What the fvck?

Plus, this is based on a graphic novel...which in itself was a DRAMATIZATION of real life, they've very different things, and from the shots I've seen, one of the best comic->movie translations in existance thus far. Take this for what it is.

That being said, I'm seeing it Friday with an open mind.

Why are people so obsessed over this movie? It's just a movie...

And why does no one ever answer this question?

The critics are correct, the Spartans wore body armor. Don't believe me? Read a history book.

The critics are NOT correct, this isn't supposed to be a historical reenactment. It's based on the graphic novel in which they wore nothing at all.. though that'd really give some people in this country heart attacks

lol exactly. Why is it hard for people to take fantasy loosely based on reality at face value? It is what it is and no one behind the movie is trying to say otherwise.

I KNOW it is based off of a graphic novel, however that does not invalidate a critics statement that the Spartans did not fight dressed like that. No one is making the argument that you shouldn't watch the movie because it is not historically accurate, they are just pointing out the absurdity and innaccuracy of portraying spartan hoplite armor the way it is in the movie. For example, what if I made a movie based on the US civil war battle of gettysburg, in which all the soldiers wore blue or gray tutus but which in all other regards was accurate? You would immediately point out that it is a bit silly to have the soldiers dressed like that, wouldn't you?

That scene is so utterly historically incorrect it isn't even funny.

The Spartans were THE heavy infantry of their day. They wore helmets, breast plates and greaves of heavy bronze and used a large round shield. More important than their armor is this analysis is the way they fought.

Spartans had mastered the Greek style of warfare based on the Phalanx. In essence, they lined up in very close quarters in rows. Each man held a 9 ft spear in his right hand and a shield in his left. Each man's shield was responsible for using his shield to protect his left side and the right side of the man next to him. The men in the back rows placed their shield against the back of the man in front so that he would be braced against the impact of the opposing soldiers charge. The spear was the primary weapon brought to bear and the first few rows of men had the tips if their spears out in front of the phalanx.

Imagine then, this bristling hedgehog of rapidly stabbing spears facing off against a charge of men who fought more as individuals and barely wore any armor. The inevitable carnage is why the greeks held out for 3 days.

A wave of Persians were ordered to charge. They did and they only ones who lived were the ones that ran away. It was an utter bloodbath much akin to the M1Abrams facing off against Iraqi tanks in Gulf War I.

My reason for nitpicking the reality is that Gates of Fire is one of the best books I have ever read and it was supposed to be made into a movie. 300 has pobably preempted it with an unrealistic portrayal of one of the most fascinating events in military history.

Normally I'd laugh at the claim that the film is overtly political in nature, but I laughed at the same notion in V for Vendetta and as a result ending up watching one of the worst movies I'd ever seen. Of course, the lame-brained over simplified politics were just one small reason why that movie sucked, so maybe I should still keep laughing.

Well, V for Vendetta was based off a comic book that was overtly political in nature. Should have been no surprise there.

For one thing, there was like one guy in this thread who posted like 10 times about how freaked out it was making him so it looks worse then it is.

For another thing, thats not warrior attire they're wearing. I don't really care, but lets call a spade a spade...warriors wore armor and clothes so they didn't die as often and so they wouldn't freeze to death every time the weather got bad. Obviously the super natural spartans featured in this stylized film don't have to worry about those kinds of things.

This movie looks ok, but its only a netflix title IMO. That little battle clip didn't really upgrade it in my eyes much either.
