So 8800GTS 512 = 9800GTX ?

I realize this is probably self-evident, but I was considering upgrading the 8800gts512 I have in one of my machines to a 9800gtx. But is the 9800gtx just a renamed 8800gts512 with higher stock clocks ?

It looks like that is exactly what it is on paper. So if I were to OC my 8800gts512, the two cards are on par ? As it is atm, my gts512 is at 800/1990/2100. So the 9800gtx is basically nothing better than this and I will see no gains ?

yes its basically an overclocked 8800GTS

They should have really named G92 something like

8900GT (G92 GT)
8900GTS (G92 GTS)
8900GTX (9800gtx

You are perfectly right.

Yup, you got it. The 9800GTX at stock runs the g92 core 25 Mhz faster and the memory runs 260Mhz faster than a stock 8800GTS g92.

It is completely ridiculous than Nvidia called it the 9800GTX. Although I think the real problem is that the 8800GT and 8800GTS g92 are not really 8-series cards. They should have called them 9-series as indicated by the core.

no it is not equal...
8800GTS 512 is the second stepping G92 core with some disabled INCOMPLETE features.
9800GTX uses the third stepping G92 core which has all the features finished, it has:
1. New features for HD decoding
2. Hybrid power support (turn off the video card COMPLETELY and use onboard video for desktop, it turns on during gameplay, only with the nforce7 for AMD so far, it requires a suitable mobo, not just drivers...).
3. Tri-sli support
4. About 10% higher clocked core, ram, and shader... resulting it actually outperforming the ultra in most situations (but not all).

The 8800GTS is basically an incomplete GF9 that was released as a GF8 refresh... and the GF9 is only a price reducing die shrink, not an improved architecture. So its cheaper, but not better.

But when it comes to FPS, they will be fairly similar, and the 8800GTS should be able to OC close to the 9800GTX.
Anyways, I got myself a 8800GTS 512. Its good enough for me.

The cores are the same... Nvidia just chose to "enable" some features in the drivers to make it seem like the 9-series are a new product. And tri-sli has got to be the most useless checkbox feature yet.

I bought a 9800GTX a few days ago, but when it wouldn't fit in my case, I exchanged it for an EVGA 8800GTS 512. Its already factory OCed, but I pushed it a bit higher and have been playing everything at 700/2000 (shader 1748), and am very happy so far. Its noticeably faster than my EVGA 8800GT SSC, plus much cooler, quiter, and more stable as well.

All things considered, the GT just sucked in comparison (slower, louder, hotter, and factory OCed too far with pathetic cooler, which resulted in annoying high-pitched fan under load and occasional crashes).

I am keeping my 8800 GTS G92. I can't justify a step-up for $80. Was really hoping the msrp on the GX2 at evga was more appealing. Oh well.....

I can step up from my 8800GTS 512 to the 9800GTX for $20 plus shipping both ways for a total of about $40. Do you think it's worth it? I game at 1920x1200 and don't upgrade often at all, probably every few years at best!

I believe the 9800GTX actually has *fewer* texturing units.

$40 is probably worth it, the GTX has better electrical components so should OC better.

Umm...no. They are both G92 with 128 stream processors and 16 ROPs.

Then there's no money to be had in the 9-series marketing!

Nvidia's train of thought:

1. Create 8-series.
2. Created G92.
3. Call new line of G92 cards = 9-series.
4. ...
5. PROFIT!!!

9800GTX is ridiculous. The amount of power it draws in comparison to the 8800GTS 512 is not even half-way justified.

the next driver release, will probably support the new functions in the 8 series g92s also. I think the current beta is a unified one, but no sites have done benchmarks yet.

if you run the current non beta drives the 9 series cards have a newer drive than the 8 series, but the beta is unified so i think it probably would be about the same.

I see a bunch of people running 800MHz on core and 2000MHz on shaders with the 9800GTX. At this point, it appears to me the 9800GTX just has better overclocking potential than the GTS 512, unless I am wrong about the GTS's overclockability.

the cooler on the 9800gtx is a bit more effective than the 8800gts but the card is also a bit longer

if it was a single card, than here:
8800GTS 320MB < 8800GTS 640MB < 8800GT 512MB < 8800GTS 512MB < 9800GTS 512

But as an SLI config things change... the fact you have higher bandwidth and more RAM might actually make it scale better in SLI than a 8800GT for example... so its hard to tell without specific testing.
