Opening a beer bottle, not a twist cap.... hand slips and the neck of the bottle breaks making a nice 3cmx 5mm gash in hand between thumb and index finger... take a trip to emergency room, since it was 10oclock at night. drive to hospital, they take us in, 20 minutes later we're walking out. quick stitches and a bandage.

no insurance. how much can i expect this to set me back?

EDIT - Pic of hand don't click if you're squeamish

Over $1000 wouldn't surprise me. I took a friend into the ER because he thought he needed to go, they gave him an IV and some meds and his bill was somewhere north of $1000.

You should check for Urgent Care services in your area - it could be cheaper but the catch is you can't be TOO hurt and it's got to be during the hours they're open.

I went because of a fever I had for about 2 weeks off and on and I was pretty bad dehydrated. 3 hour wait. Finally got in. They gave me fluids, the doctor saw me for about 1.5 seconds to hand me a prescription.
$1300 for the ER visit. Medicine was $45. Did not help. Went another week or so before I finally shook the bug off.

Yeah... probably around that.

Had a similar thing happen but it was at work, so I never saw the full bill. A piece of lab equipment shattered in my hand and left me with a gash... not as many stitches as you have, though.

I just know that the hospital tried to send me a bill for about $560. Took it to HR and they took care of it. (dunno if this was supposed to be pre or post insurance costs from the company, though.)

I had to get X-Rays done to make sure there was no glass stuck in my hand, so that might have jacked up the price more than yours.

This is just to see an E.R. physician at my hospital.

If you're asking for a business to staff doctors, nurses, lab personnel, radiology personnel, custodians, etc... for 24 hours a day. I know it only took you less than an hour, but sutures will include equipment, too. Expect them to bill you appropriately. They'll accept 70% of what they bill, though. Just ask.

It depends. I got hit in the mouth with an elbow playing basketball and cut my lip open. Needed 6 stitches and it cost me $1200, but it was on my face and required something special to keep from scarring. I can't remember what it was they did though.

I dunno for you, but for me it would be $40 for any emergency room visit.

Insurance is a wonderful thing.

Were you trying to open the bottle in some strange way, or were you using an opener? If the latter, it might be worth talking to the beer people and seeing if they'll reimburse.

She went to the ER because of a back strain? Can't say I blame them for making you wait 5 hours.

well, since you have no insurance, you will be billed the highest rate the hospital has most likely. You could try negotiating. I would guess somewhere around $1000 though.
