But dont plasmas have a certain amount of time till the burn out? LCDs will last a lot longer?

I seem to think Plasmas are bad, they suck blah blah, but I keep hearing they have good picture quality and good blacks., good response time for games..ect

So I dont see why I still have a bad picture in my head about Plasmas? They are definitely cheaper.

Not an issue these days. The good brands like Panasonic, Samsung and LG list 100,000 hours till half life for their plasmas under normal viewing conditions. Believe LCD's are the same too.

Who knows just how accurate the numbers are, but chances are you'll have upgraded to a new tv long before one dies.

hmm What about Logos like TBS if you watch TBS alot? Will that get burned in?

Not if you take the necessary precautions available. I've noticed a huge difference in just image retention between my 2009 and 2010 Samsungs. The 2009 gets IR quite easily, the 2010 seems to be almost completely immune to it. The IR on the 2009 goes away after running the scrolling bar for a couple minutes though, never anything close to burn-in on either tv's.

If you break your tv in properly (200+ hours, even though some claim it's not necessary anymore), enable the screen protection settings in the tv menu, and don't run it in torch mode, you shouldn't ever have an issue with burn in unless you abuse the tv by leaving still images on for hours. Supposedly mine has a setting for detecting a still image and will auto-shutoff after 10min, but haven't tested it.

I went to my local Best Buy yesterday...that place is always crap of course...and I have no plans to buy from them...but they are the best thing I have locally to demo hardware.

Anyway, they had plenty of the older G20 series Plasmas but no G25s. They also did not have the Samsung LED that I am considering. That said, I tried to do as much A-to-B testing between LEDs and Plasmas as possible. My thoughts? No doubt that Plasmas appear more natural and while LEDs have an initial "wow" factor due to their level of backlighting, I think that could easily become fatiguing. "Cartoon like" is also a good descriptor of LEDs. So I think I am leaning Plasma: the Panasonic G25, 50".

But I want to do a little more comparing I think.

the G20 and the G25 are the SAME TV

the only difference is you can hook up a network camera to the G25 and monitor different room in your house

the GT25 is a newer TV that is the same internals as the G20/25 but also does 3D, also costs more

I am kinda like you.

I was looking at LED because it uses the least power, and seemed best/newest, but then I read Plasma has advantages and the better 3D, (I am thinking I'd like to get 3D this go around) but then I read all but DLP have terrible crosstalk on their 3D.

Now I'm actually looking at Mitsubishi DLPs, I won't lie though. 60" 3D capable DLP for $500 or a fraction the cost of LED and Plasma TVs with superior 3D are starting to look quite attractive.

Hmmm... I stopped looking at DLPs 3 years ago. Headache-inducing rainbow (with the colour wheels).

How are they now?

Mind you I've never liked rear projection anyway.

If you have the money, the panny vt series is the best current tv, the vizio xvt3sv series is very good for the money and Sam's Club has the 55" for sale on BF for $1500 however from what I read its hit or miss in the quality department (defective units or blooming issues).

I stand behind the panny g25 series for the price range. The Samsung pnc8000 or 7000 are very good and can be had for similar pricing.

The GF and I went to Best Buy together yesterday and we both agree that we prefer Plasma...so I think the Panny 50" G25 model is where we're going.

Plasma's are the way to go because unless you can afford last years top of the line local dimming LED LCD(this years local dimming are worse than last years).

Very few LCD's top Panny's VT or G series, Samsungs 6500 on up series, and LGs PK550-950 series. The ones that do cost a ton more.

Burn in is non existent on modern plasmas. Temporary image retention is nearly so on Panasonic and Samsung plasmas, and is slightly more prevalent on LGs but LGs get better with age.

The only real issue for plasmas is power consumption.

I am in the plasma camp. I've had my Panasonic 50" 1080p plasma for about a year now and I love it.

DLP's are great for the money and give great PQ when viewed straight on but the biggest reason why I didn't get one was the HORRID viewing angles. The angles really do suck but if that doesn't bother you then you can get more for your money than even Plasma.

I agree and I think Plasma is not just value for money but just plain better. LCD gets pushed hard because it is more profitable.

I bought my P50G25 two months ago and it's been nothing but absolutely stunning. My only regret if any is not getting the 54".

For what it's worth, cnet called the G20/G25 the Best TV picture quality for the dollar. I don't usually put too much stock into what cnet says but I find it hard not to agree. I think you get incredible picture quality for ~$1k from the P50G25, not that I'm biased or anything though.

Cool. Thanks for the feedback.

Given my space constraints, 50" is pushing it, so I will be sticking with that.

I have made my decision...just need to push the "buy" button.

I've owned Plasma, LCD and DLP.

Plasma gets my vote, hands down. LCD looks over processed to me while Plasma's look more natural. Loving my current tv - Samsung 50" PN50B650 Plasma

Burn is has never been an issue, and I left mine on for a 4-5 hours with white text frozen on a black background (PS3 Firmware update that I forgot that I was running), looks perfect.

I'd just spend the money on an Epson HD projector. The 8350 is $1200 shipped, and it's absolutely fantastic.

No argument...if I had a dedicated theater room, which I don't, so a stand-alone TV is what I need given my current living arrangements.

Yeah, it hate that too about most rear projection in general (not just DLP).

However, I was specifically wondering about the rainbows, in 2010 (because when I was looking at them in 2007 they were still a big problem). In fact, it's not just that I find it annoying, but it gives me headaches too after a short while.

I noticed image retention on my 2010 LG, but it was the same 4:3 screen on for several hours, with black bars on the sides. I switched to a 16:9 image and it was gone in seconds. This was when the TV was just a few days old.

The only real issue for plasmas is power consumption.
My 2010 plasma actually uses the same or less power than my LCD of the same size (42"). However, my LCD is from 2007. I'm sure that LCD power requirements have decreased since then on average.

P.S. My LG 42PJ550 is actually thinner than that 2007 Toshiba LCD too.

I've never noticed the rainbow effect at all on all the DLP's I've seen. I know not everyone can notice it so I might be one of the lucky ones. My local electronics warehouse store has 8 Mitsu DLP tv's on display and have never noticed the rainbow on any of them.

Plasmas just get a bad rap because of power consumption exaggerations, lingering image burn rumors, and they look worse in most general electronic stores compared to lcd's. That is fine by me though, makes the superior display cost less because of less demand.

I dont really care about the LCD vs Plasma debate since I dont watch that much tv and own a Samsung 67 LED DLP. So I am not in the market for a tv for another decade. But my buddy had a plasma tv. One night we fell asleep watching Casino. The next morning the menu from the movie was burned into the screen. It wasnt horrible, but definately noticeable when the screen was dark. So the burn in is real.
