So am I the only person here that uses RealBASIC?

I'll try to ignore the scoffing of the C crowd, but I like it and the ability to create Linux binary is useful for me, too.

Anyone?

My father uses BASIC at his place of employment, they have some (very expensive) machines controlled by BASIC programs. BASIC was actually my first programming language in high school days and I like it (although I primarily use VB.NET 2005 when I program for fun). I did write a few simple games in BASIC. IIRC, Ultima 1 (not the remake of it) was coded primarily in BASIC with the graphics being done in assembly.

nowadays i have a little bit of VB knowledge (very minimal)
and i can hardly remember anything from BASIC

I'm not familiar with RealBASIC though.

I use both purebasic and powerbasic.
Purebasic create linux, Mac, windows, even amiga binaries.

I like purebasic because its not tied to any one platform and the programs generated require no external files.
Powerbasic is what I use if I need something done in only windows.
Its faster and easier to use than VB, used quite a bit in the engineering world.

It doesn't matter to me what language a person decides to use.
All this C rules, no C#, etc crap is pointless.
As long as the program runs and does what it should I don't care.

So, I have a (fairly) vague understanding of what the basic language propers offer. But I'm curious, what's the api situation like in your setup? stdout I'm sure. Anything more powerful than line-based stdin? I guess there must be a file io api. How about graphics toolkits?

I thought about using RB for a recent project, and may still do so. I've never used it for any other projects. I've heard that the cross-platform capabilities don't work quite as expected or advertised. What's your experience creating cross-platform apps using REALBasic? I'm more interested in creating Windows and Mac binaries rather than Linux binaries, but having that option is nice, as well.

I'd never heard of purebasic before...does purebasic create Universal binaries or Intel binaries for the Mac? From the looks of the purebasic Web site, it only creates executables for PowerPC-based Macs.

I've used RealBasic before for an academic research app during my univ. days. It is a good tool for prototyping, and has some nice multimedia features (quicktime). For quick and dirty apps that aren't mission critical, it has its benefits.

RealBasic is well suited for academic or hobby projects. For real work I'd much rather go with any .NET technology to develop a windows application because it provides a comprehensive framework.

It's been argued quite a bit elsewhere, but I'm still not convinced that .NET is the right platform for desktop application development. The framework requirement is still a little steep, imho. If you're creating internal apps, that's one thing, but for creating desktop apps that you want to sell, I'm just not convinced .NET is the way to go. (And I've worked as a .NET programmer for most of the past 3-4 years).

What do you mean by the API situation? How to get stuff in? Well RB has TCP and UDP, can use files, of course, you can write stuff to read serial devices, you name it. No, limits.

The graphics can be anything from sprite to OpenGL, so again, just time and energy required.

I'm using RB 2006r2.

I've only experimented with creating Linux versions of my programs and apart from the odd graphical glitch, such as a buttons text being to long for the control, they have worked flawlessly.

RB was originally born on the Mac, so AFAIK the Apple side of things is pretty much a given.

I learned QBASIC when I was a kid. That wasn't too long ago though, 10 years, maybe. That was my first programming language. Havne't used RealBasic though. I looked it up and I see there are different variations of BASIC.
